Dip Stick Markings

There are marking on the oil dip stick but no explanation in the owners manual as to what they mean. Does anyone really know? I'm just guessing at this point.

My understanding is the top of the has harks is optimal full level and the bottom of the hash marks is about 1 quart low.

If you are talking about the three holes, they are intended to help read the oil level. The one at the top of the hash marks indicates full/optimum level, one in the middle indicates half quart low, one at the bottom indicates a quart low.

Can you describe the markings or post a picture? My crystal ball is in the shop.

That's what I'm guessing too, owner manual tells you nothing. It was at the middle mark and I added 1/2 qt it then showed at the top of the upper hash marks.

I don’t know what year you own. But oil level is ALWAYS covered in the owners manual as are all fluid levels...

Is this your first automobile or the first time you've ever checked the oil level?

Not in mine...no dip stick is shown that is in my engine and the one that is shown there are no explanations of the marks that are shown. It also does not show what is the proper operating level just says it should "somewhere within" what that is is not shown. After some testing it seems the entire dip stick from the lowest hash marks to the highest equals 1qt. Amazing!
