Arrow 2020 - Best Brake Upgrade

Hey Guys,

I read a lot about brake upgrade kits for the Camaro SS. I Have a 2011 Convertible Automatic running 20" Z28 spec wheels with a Tune, Headers, Cat Delete, CAI, Catback, Throttle body, Sway Bars, Poly Bushings, Strut Brace etc.

I am considering either the Genuine ZL1 Front & Rear Upgrade package (a little steep) or the CTS-V Upgrade Kit (Who all offers this currently??)

I would prefer to stick with OEM/Brembo options as I dont wan't to experiment with anything non OEM with brakes!

Look into the C7 Corvette Z06/Grand Sport caliper they are cheaper than the ZL1 and also come with vented pistons. Now rotors will be a issue unless you can source a set of somebodies junk rotors and use a set of KNS/DBA rotors for the Z06/GS. Or find a set of OEM ZL1’s about 300’ish per rotor. Also there’s a set of Brembo rotors for less than 175.

You can get 6 piston CTSV2 calipers for under $300.00 each from Auto Zone 249.00 plus 47.00 core charge

You also get your choice of 3 colors Silver Yellow or Red

Rotors are about 75 bucks each

You do not need rear brakes as your 4 piston rears are the same as a ZL1s

All you need is good pads, the brakes on the car stock are plenty. See if Carbotech makes the AX6 for the car.

Flush and add DOT4 fluid.

Stock 2 piston C5 Vette brakes with good pads and fluid. Car is on slicks.

I am not planning to run slicks and skinnies that was my 99TA

I love the look of some big red calipers showing through the 5 spokes

Besides when you drive into the Big Smoke (Toronto) the stop and go traffic is murder on brakes as you repeatedly get up to speed and have to slam them on again and again.

The highway is full of rear end collisions probably because of brake fade.

Not everyone is driving in the red group. On my first outing at Sebring I burned up a fresh track set up from EBC in one session. Obviously, I could do better with my braking or I could put on a ZL1 set up and not worry about it until I can get out of the novice class. Admittedly, if I was running less power, it would be less of a problem, but where is the fun in that?

I did the same on my first couple track days on my 1LE. My EBC Yellow pads were destroyed when the day was finished.
Switched to Hawk HPS Plus the next track day and they were also destroyed and my calipers were starting to brown from the heat. Figured I would rather have more braking power then I need, so when I discovered the Z06-6 pistons bolt right up, I snapped up a set off RockAuto.

Also the C5 is much lighter then these chonky 5th gens. Plus I love the look of large brakes, especially on these cars with the 20" wheels.

This post doesn't make much sense, Red group in PCA are the fastest guys which means they are the hardest on the brakes. I was running stock C5 brakes on Pirelli slicks with Raybestos ST43 pads with no issues.

The 4 piston Brembos are plenty of brakes with the correct pads and fluid, especially for the street. The Carbotech AX6 pads and DOT4 fluid is an incredible setup for the street, autocross or light track duty.

Why would you spend all that money for a ZL1 setup and not need them?

A real track pad for these cars would be a Raybestos ST43, Carbotech XP12/XP10 combo or something in that world.

Neither one of those pads belongs on a track. Both are junk, especially for a heavy car.
