That car has a unique story, with that said, good luck with the sale.

What's 'unique' about the story? Because it got t-boned by a sedan in a showroom?

That adds value to the car? Why? And to who would the story matter to?

Actual question,

How does a car like this get totaled from "purely cosmetic" damage?

Let's play Devil's Advocate and value the car for $45,000. Typically (not always) insurance likes to start debating whether or not to total a vehicle around the 70-80% value mark.

That's $31,500 estimated damages based on fairly conservative numbers.

Anything is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Not what someone is asking for it.

You need to chill out, Car is over priced at the dealer, dose not sale, then some how it gets t-boned in the show room, that's unique IMO, Gets totaled for not much damage again IMO.

No where in my reply did i say what its worth + or - you did that, all that was said was good luck with sale of the car.

If memory serves the accident on this car happened at a time when they were just hitting showrooms, and were going for window and above.

So 70% of $75,000 = $52,500.... from "purely cosmetic" damage?

And I'm not posting to demean the owner, the ad, etc.... I just have no concept of how that wreck (based on the photo) could cause anywhere from $32k - $53k in damage... especially if the wreck didn't damage any of the suspension, airbags, other expensive stuff.

Maybe it's just me but in my experience, this is more than just cosmetic damage.

Online insurance auctions have made big changes in how insurance companies total cars. If a vehicle is in demand they will total it out knowing they will recover a large amount of value from salvage buyers. Meaning less money out of pocket for the ins companies = less loss. = Greater profits. That said anyone purchasing a previously crashed car-salvage or not should have a competent chassis man look at the car for them. There are a lot of shops doing subpar repairs that have no clue about crumple zones. Differences in structural steel - using heat -sectioning etc..

I understand the idea of market average but in my honest opinion with a car like the z28 you almost have to pick those lower outliers to base value on. If I can go to Texas or California and get a clean title car for less than $5k net difference I can guarantee that 99% of buyers will go that route.
