Really, that is the only true answer. How long the car lasts completely depends on how well the owner maintains it.
Just like most any other car, I think the electronics are probably the most susceptible to damage over time. Keep water out of your car as much as possible. Well, that and the paint/body also.

I must say that is a level of self control I cannot fathom. I don’t beat the piss out of mine, but a good drift thru an empty parking lot or a nice launch with no nannies is something I just can’t resist once in a while.

my car has 94,000 miles on it now 2010 2ss/rs with ls3. other then tires brake pads oil changes the only real repair ive had to do that was from any sort of failure is the power steering pump. I guess you could count my oil dipstick tube breaking when I did my headers as a failure but it wouldn't have broken if I hadn't tried pulling it to do headers.

I have calculated based on my remaining life span and the fact that I drive the car 50 miles per week that my car will last my life time and still not get to 150K before I kick the bucket. My GN has 170K over the past 33 years I drive it only about 100 miles per year so that one will never get to 180K before I kick the same bucket. So as far as I am concerned my cars will out last me. |

I'm not so much concerned with longevity as I am with the cost of upkeep. As posters have already stated, a car can last as long as your patience and bank account holds out. Practically speaking, we all have our threshold at a certain cost point: it is costing me more to maintain it than I would prefer.
A more appropriate question is just that: "How much is it costing me to keep this car?" That's easy to equate financially, but you may want to factor in other variables (time spent tinkering on it, missed appointments due to poor operation, the overall driving experience in general, etc). I have calculated that it costs me an estimated 29.52 cents/mile to maintain my Camaro. In comparison, I calculated my wife's 2020 Toyota C-HR estimated cost/mile to be 21.54 cents, and my son's 2008 Honda Accord to be an estimated 16.50 cents/mile. All of these figures contain straight line depreciation, by the way, so it's not a true Maintenance figure as it is a personal cost figure. That gives me somewhat of a baseline to go by, anyway. Removing Depreciation (a true Maintenance Cost): 2014 Camaro: 19.13 cents/mile 2020 Toyota C-HR: 9.79 cents/mile 2008 Honda Accord: 14.10 cents/mile Last edited by ElderJ; 09-17-2020 at 10:36 PM. |

any modern car will last damn near forever if you take care of it. and by take car it, it's basically just change the oil and coolant when needed. due to environmental standards, cars now burn damn near everything that goes in the combustion chamber. there's next to no un-burnt fuel left to break down the oil film and cause internal wear. how long it last really comes down to how much you want to put in it. I'd guess somewhere around 250k miles or 16 years or so it will probably start nickle and diming you. unless its primarily garage kept, rust will probably be starting to show up, and a lot of parts will start to go. starter, alternator, suspension components etc.

I think a lot of it depends on if you can do your own maintenance and perform the minor to moderate repairs that come up on an aging car. If you need to take it in to a dealer or repair shop for every little thing, your threshold for repair cost will be much lower.
Fortunately, I can do most of my own repairs except for specialized engine or transmission work so I can probably keep my car a lot longer than the average person. So, basically it comes down to how much work you can do on the car and how much you're willing to spend on repairs as it depreciates. |
