Chrome ring steering wheel/airbag fix. 2010-2011

Thought I'd share this with you all. Hopefully it helps someone else out.
When I purchased my used 2011 camaro ss earlier this year the interior was all nearly perfect with the exception of the chrome ring on the steering wheel. The chrome was peeling badly (as it seems to do on all of these).
A new airbag is.. Well expensive and my understanding is this trim ring is not replaceable independently.
My solution to this cost about $20 and a couple of hours verses replacing the whole airbag which from quotes would cost $400+.

I masked off the steering wheel and meticulously around the chrome ring, and used masking paper/masking tape and some sheets in the car to cover all areas thoroughly.
Then I lightly wet sanded all of the remaining fake chrome off of the ring area (1000 grit, then 1500). I used wet dry sandpaper and a mini spray bottle with water that I misted on the sandpaper itself.
Dried everything and sprayed adhesion promoter and followed it up with 3 very light coats of black paint.
Removed my masking and voila!.
Pics below of before, during, after stages and my choices of paint all from O'reilly's.

Nice work! And the black ring looks cool. The original design steering wheel is the best. I love everything about the 2010 Camaro except the lack of a backup camera.

I must say, there's not a hint of peeling on my 2010, but it is always garaged. I wonder if sun and heat are the culprits.

Thanks guys I am very pleased with how it turned out!.
@rock-it-man yeah probably caused atleast in part by the sun.
I'm also working on lack of backup camera. I installed a double din radio and will be adding back up camera shortly here.

Great job but I would have taken it off and painted it outside of car.

Thanks all!. And @Neoclasiccl I considered it and your way would have been more thorough but due to time, I opted to cover everything with a sheet and mask the wheel. It worked perfectly fine for the minimal amount of mist/overspray this time.

This option has been discussed before on here and so far, nobody has come up with an answer as to if and how to remove the ring to paint it. And still has not been answered yet, at least I haven't seen one yet.

I believe Neoclassiccl was referring to removing the airbag assembly from the car not the ring itself. (unless I misunderstood him?).
From my research and fiddling around there really is no good way to remove the ring unfortunately.
