Rear differential fluid change

Should it be replaced after the 1,500 miles break in period? The book doesn't say anything; in fact there's a check box at 45,000miles for severe use or 97,500miles for regular use. Also, you're supposed to change it every time you track it.

Any advice? I'm planning to use Mobil1 LS 75W-90

There will be some metal shavings in there that could be benificial to remove, but probably not necessary. I know people who own other sports cars and haven't changed it with no issues. It would take a pretty big shaving to mess up your rear end gears.

I will be changing all powertrain fluids at probably 500 miles, and again at 1500-2000, just for peace of mind. After that, I will follow GM's maintenance schedule. But I'm silly like that.

It doesn't hurt to change it early. I changed the differential gear oil at about 9,000 miles on my SS and it looked horrible. I used Amsoil Severe Gear 75-90 with 2.5oz of GM posi additive.

Like what's already been stated...its you're peace of mind so if you don't mind spending the time and money then by all means do it. It's your baby that you wrote a hard earned check for so do what makes your feel comfortable and assured that it will remain a well oiled machine. In the owners manual GM recommends changing the dif fluid after every 24 hours of track time. So if you track/race the car change it at 45K or 24 hours of track use whichever comes first.

I changed mine at my 1500 mile service. I think I read somewhere that it's recommended if you intend to track the car.

I had my diff. fluid, and oil changed today. I asked the dealer
about mobile 1, and he said the Tech that went to school for training
on the Z said that GM did not recommend doing that. He said
that I should put in the Dexos 1 Syn. blend That GM recommends
I have 1545 mi. on it at the time, I also put a K & N high flo filter
in the stock box, Sure seems like it pulls much harder with the increased air flo.

The manual does say:
Use only engine oil licensed to the dexos1 specfication, or equivalent, of
the proper SAE viscosity grade. ACDelco dexos1 Synthetic Blend is recommended.

But not for the:
Rear Differential Fluid 75W-90 Limited Slip (GM Part No. 88862624, in
Canada 88862625).

Same as DEXRON® LS gear oil ?

Here's a partial list of Dexos1 certified oils. I should add that Amsoil has 3 formulations that will work in the ZL1 that meet the Dexos1 certification and actually exceed it on the sulfated ash specs.

^^^^ RoketRdr beat me to the link ^^^^

You can use Mobil1 or any of these:

of course GM is going to push their own ACDelco product.....but any of these meet the requirements...

I just changed my engine oil and rear diff fluid at 1500 just for peace of mind.
I think it is recommended to change rear diff every hours of track time.
