I have to agree with the personal preference- if I had to choose 1 for drag racing, I would choose the L99 with auto- it's consistent and fast.

But, I bought mine because I've always wanted a manual transmission in my muscle car. I've always had autos, and they were fun. Now I've got a stick, and I love it. It's fun to drive, I can choose my own gear at any time, dump the clutch at 2200 RPM and the tires dissappear in a cloud of smoke.

Plus- there is something cool about telling people " It's got an LS3, same motor as the Corvette". People dig that.....say it to yourself:

I've got an L99.

I've got an LS3.

Which one sounds old school? Yeah......LS3...almost an LS7.

Regardless of which is the more preferred transmission, the one thing I can`t understand is why the auto wasn`t offered as an option for the 426 HP SS. If you intended to do any serious drag racing and looking for consistent performance, then in my opinion a purpose built auto is the best choice between the two. If it`s road racing or you just like banging gears, then it`s the manual.

ls3 has more power

the auto wasnt offered with the LS3 because GM would have had to do a full set of testing with that powertrain combo, which takes money that they didnt want to spend at the time. maybe in a year or two. also, there would probably not be a high market value for it.

I would also assume they would have had to add a gas guzzler tax as well....just like with the challenger SRT8. Which would have jumped it up another 2 grand or so..........

There is merrit to this statement. When asked about the motor I tell them "It'sthe LS3 .............modified a bit for gas mileage "

I wouldnt' call an LS3 'Old School' though.

...not in the twisty's it doesn't. Not unless you want to wreck your car trying to find the paddle to downshift in a hairpin turn.

That's the real reason, read it in the Super Chevy interview with Al Oppenheiser.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the info in this thread, I'm currently back in country, but on a previous tour in Iraq, I suffered an injury to my left knee which makes operating a clutch painful after about 20-30 minutes. I was contemplating "sucking it up" and getting the LS3, but with the input I'm hearing from the L99 owners and the promise that a simple tune can bring them closer to LS3 numbers, I'm hopeful. Thanks again!

There's no shame in getting the L99, my friend. You'll have fun either way, and both cars are mod-friendly. Enjoy either way!
