hurst shifter question

just got my husrt shifter for manual transmission, read through the instructions, installation seems pretty complicated, how long did it take you guys to install it? i'm pretty much mechanically challenged so i took it to a local shop and they quoted 2-3hrs...

Seems like 1 1/2 - 2 hours if I remember correctly. You really need access to a lift though. It would be a pain in the roo to do it on jackstands. Great shifter BTW.

It took about 2 hours for me to do mine, and a half hour of that was fishing a 1/4 inch ratchet out of the guard pan between the exhaust and drive shaft after it flipped out of my hand. I would suggest blocking that off before you start. Whatever is in the kit for rattle abatement, make sure they use that, too. I got one of the first shifters to come out which didn't have any. I used some Dynomat wherever I could and it probably helped, but it still rattles a little under load. (3500-4500)

If you discount the 30 minutes to get the car up on Jackstands and the 35 minutes trying to put that dam ruber boot back on with two fingers of the same hand...mine took about 90 minutes total. VERY easy. BTW I never put in dynomat and mine is quiet, firm and does not rattle. It's more firm to get into gear and has a "click" but LOVE IT! Biggest issue is I'm now too fast on hard shifts from 1st to 2nd and a bit of grindin takes place!

I did mine on jack stands. Biggest pain in the a$$ was getting the rubber boot back on. It took me about 3 hours total from car on the ground to total completion.

IMHO, a mechanic with a lift should be able to do this job in no more than 2 hours, probably much less.

I dropped my Camaro and Hurst shifter off at my dealer. I went and had lunch. Came back and it was done. Like magic. $200 magic trick. But they did a great job, haven't had any issues with it yet. It seems to get better with age too.

Took me about 2 hours as well. The biggest pain in the ass was the centering springs on the v6. I needed extra hands.

Well, removing the old shifter and installing the new one took about 1 hr. Hunting for the different things that fell behind the stupid heatshield took a total of 30 minutes. There were 2 things that were a pain in the a$$. 1. Getting the rubber boot back on. 2. Getting the 1st hurst rubber oval ring started onto the shifter.

I've done it twice now, '10 2ss and a '12 2ss vert, first one took 55 minutes, second time it took me 40 minutes. In all fairness I did have a lift and a friend both times. Both of us are mechanically inclined, I would rate it an easy install for me. I wouldnt want to do it on jack stands, but I think thats just because I'm getting old, LOL.

If you have a V6 take note of the centering spring comment from Zombi.

They're not mentioned in how-to video (unless its changed since I did mine) and greatly complicates the removal of the shifter. You can leave them off once you've installed the Hurst (I did without any problems), but getting the stock shifter out is more difficult than depicted in the vid.

If you've got the V6 and mech challenged, 2-3 shop hrs ain't bad.
