I think it depends on the group. I’m personally with you on this one but I also post on a financial forum with a lot of people way richer than me and there’s a lot more talk of E92s and C63s than Camaros, Mustangs and Challengers. It took me awhile to figure out those are BMWs and Mercedes. They are fine automobiles but I feel like you pay about twice as much as you should so you can have the German nameplate on the front.

Me, I’m happy with my Camaro or Monte Carlo and some rock and roll or country rock on the stereo.

M5s are nice but you can see why BMW went back to the drawing board after '09 with the introduction of the CTS-V. Both BMW and Mercedes were totally caught off guard by the angular Cadillac with its southpaw engine.

I've always wondered why some people enjoy buying 10-15 year old German cars. Just to fake being rich? Hey, it's their money, their deal. Without a factory warranty, BMW's and Benz's are money pits.

To each their own.

I own both of the cars. Pre-ordered 2010 Camaro SS and a 2006 BMW M5. To true car enthusiasts, the M5 is very special considering its powertrain and limited production quantities (only ~8,000 made for the states).

I get looks in both cars all of the time. The M crowd is more cult-like, that's for sure. lol.

Not with the 2006-2010 M5. They're just special cars. Large NA V10s that we won't ever see again unless you're buying a Lamborghini. Oh, and they carry 4 people comfortably. A big plus for me!

imho all bmw's look shite except the m2.
they all rust away to dust here in sweden within 8 years and depreciate like hell.
i would never own ANY german car except a 911 porsche..i have driven over 2 million miles and never owned a single german car.
seen sooooooo many folk get bitten..wifes friend bought some pos merc new in 2000 costing 60k.no idea the model as i have zero interest in the things.
anyway once it was 8 years aold it failed the yearly inspection on rust..basically she had to scrap the junk.
60k up in smoke in just 8 years.
my DD cars are cheap hyundais..any new car with a long warranty..camaro's and corvettes are my passion..

I'm not contesting that they are special. I am contesting the point of buying a car that is extremely expensive to fix when it is 10-15 years old, the warranty has been long gone and you're using it as a DD. An alternator for an '06 Malibu is $75. An alternator for an '06 M5 can be upwards of $475. Again, it's not my money. To each their own. Older, out of warranty German vehicles cost a fortune to maintain.

I am a big fan of that generation M5. I almost bought a 2007 M5 instead of my Camaro, but the bearing issue and Vanos scared me away.

Yes, they are special cars and they have huge followings. But they are most certainly money pits.
