I'd do it. You won't get the quick 312+ HP from the same year era V8.

The 4.3 V6 was only 140 HP.
The 5.0 was 150 HP.

The LFX in there will kick ass.

Unless, you want to go modern V8.

Maybe build up a 350 Rocket engine.
The 5.0L in the Monte Carlo SS had 180 hp. Some minor mods to the Q jet could get it up to around 200+ hp. The L69 was downrated by GM and actually put out around 200-210 hp. It wasnt as bad as people make it out to be.

Well I’ve decided to pass on this swap. I’ve swapped engines before and even done v6 to v8 conversion a couple times before. I appreciate everyone’s input on the matter you guys all helped me decide. My gbody build will begin most likely this winter. I’m far to deep on my 5th gen madness at the moment.

you can build a stout 406 sbc for around 4k. my neighbor has one he built in his 86 cutlass with a M20 4 speed and that car gets down.

I would think it would be worth for the uniqueness alone. Who has an LFX G-body? Probably very few. I think that would be an awesome swap, assuming you can keep costs low.

Those Monte Carlos should've had the IROC 350 engines. I say go with a 383 stroker, dress it up like an original 305 weezer then show the midnight drag competition your taillights.

Yeah, but the 350 didn't come out in the IROC until '87. So, they would have had to certify emissions for an all new engine for just one or two more model years. It really wasn't worth it for them. Sales were so good with the 305 that they extended production into '88. Even with the L69, they sold like hotcakes back in the day. I always wished they went on for another model year or two and got the flush Euro headlight treatment like the LS models did..

Gotta keep the v8 in it, swapping a newer motor would just be a bunch of headache with electrical issues.

There was a guy a few cities over that painted his Monte Carlo SS in nascar colors complete with wheels and yellow lettered tires. It was always parked at a machine shop facing a busy street. It looked really cool . Makes me wonder why GM never did a special decorative "nascar edition" when those cars were new.

LS motor or don't bother. It will be easier to trade for a SS Camaro.

Yea, now that I am seeing it I think it deserves a beefy built LS.

Do what you want with the car. If you like going against the grain than do it! Have fun with whatever you build and however you want to build it. I love V8 exhaust note too much, so I couldn't do it, but I do enjoy looking at other people's odd ball swaps.
