THE 2013 CAMARO 1LE:
ANOTHER ICON RETURNS

The 2013 1LE Performance Package is more than just a tough-looking, aggressive Camaro. It's the latest entry in a legendary lineup of track-dominating racing machines and it's taking performance to the next level.

Here we take a quick look back at the origins of RPO code 1LE.


TRIGGERING RPO 1LE
The original intent of 1LE was to allow Chevrolet to offer a Camaro designed specifically for a road course. A 1LE-equipped car wasn't designed for everyone. Because of this, the order procedure was kept relatively quiet.

Between model years 1989 and 1992, RPO 1LE was
triggered by ordering the RPO G92 Performance axle
with an IROC-Z Coupe ('89 and '90) or Z28 coupe ('91 and '92). Each year saw slightly different 1LE packages.

When G92 was ordered, it forced other options such as
engine oil cooler, 4-wheel disc brakes, dual converter
exhaust and P245/50ZR16 tires. A G92 Camaro required either the 350ci (RPO B2L) engine with automatic transmission, or the 305ci (RPO LB9) with five-speed manual.

Basically, it worked like this. If RPO G92 was ordered
with air conditioning, the cars were built as street
vehicles. If air conditioning was NOT ordered, 1LE racing equipment was added. This included features such as an aluminum driveshaft, performance brakes inspired by the Corvette (a detail that lives on in the 2013 1LE), specialized front and rear shock absorbers, heavy-duty jounce bumpers, and fuel tank baffles. Fog lamps were deleted both for weight savings and to improve airflow into the radiator for improved cooling capability.

1993
The 1LE package offered at the start of Camaro's fourth generation included larger stabilizer bars, radiator baffles, and HD shocks and struts. As in previous years, air conditioning was not available when one ordered a 1LE package.

1994-1997
Around this time, the 1LE became known as the
Performance Suspension Package and was aimed at
anyone who wanted a little more bang out of their
Camaro, not just hardcore racers.

1998-2000
With the advent of a mid-cycle update on the Camaro,
the 1LE package changed due to suspension updates and the introduction of the aluminum-block LS1 engine. The package now primarily included heavier-duty suspension components and manually adjustable shocks/struts. Air conditioning was now available with the 1LE package, and the package could now be ordered on either the Z28 or the Camaro SS.

2001-2002
As product priorities shifted, the 1LE package was
dropped as a regular RPO option. Disheartened
enthusiasts had no way of knowing, but a triumphant
return would eventually be in the cards...

2013
The 1LE is back and ready to run. From its red Brembo® front and rear brakes to its lightweight wheels and unique performance suspension, the 2013 Camaro 1LE Performance Package is more than worthy of the 1LE name

When I look over the Chevrolet Performance link provided, there is no mention of the drivetrain updates: close-ratio tranny, rear gearing, stronger half shafts, wheel bearings, etc... Am I missing something? Is that why the price is $3500, less that anticipated???

This is what will be on the 1LE. The things that got deleted are the 6-piston Brembos, the ZL1 side skirts, and the hash marks. Everything else made it, I believe.

While the Camaro SS features a Tremec TR6060-M10 for all-around performance, the Camaro 1LE features an exclusive Tremec TR6060-MM6. Paired with a numerically higher 3.91 final-drive ratio, the close-ratio gearing of the transmission is tuned for road-racing performance. As with the ZL1, the 1LE transmission features a standard air-to-liquid cooling system for track use.

The 1LE also features exclusive, monotube rear dampers instead of the twin-tube dampers on SS models. The new hardware allowed engineers to tune the 1LE suspension to focus on optimal body-motion control while preserving much of the ride quality and wheel-motion control of the Camaro SS.

Other changes to optimize the 1LE for track-day use include:

Larger, 27-mm solid front stabilizer bar, and 28-mm solid rear stabilizer bar for improved body control
Higher-capacity rear-axle half shafts to cope with increased levels of traction
Strut tower brace for improved steering feel and response
ZL1-based 20 x 10-inch front and 20 x 11-inch aluminum wheels
285/35ZR20 Goodyear Eagle Supercar G:2 tires front and rear (identical to the front tires for ZL1)
ZL1 wheel bearings, toe links and rear shock mounts for improved on-track performance
ZL1 high-capacity fuel pump and additional fuel pickups for improved fuel delivery during high-cornering

Visually, the 1LE package for 2013 is distinguished by its matte-black hood, front splitter and rear spoiler – as well as the 10-spoke ZL1-based wheels, which are finished in black. The functional front splitter and rear spoiler contribute to the car’s on-track performance by helping to reduce aerodynamic lift at high speeds.

Inside, the 1LE package incorporates the ZL1’s flat-bottom steering wheel, trimmed in sueded-microfiber and designed for easier heel-and-toe driving on the racetrack. The quick-acting, short-throw shifter from the ZL1 is also trimmed in sueded microfiber.

I'm not sure what it means about the RPO Code being dropped for the 2001-2002 F-bodies. There are 1LE cars from those years.

It would make sense that the front and rear wheels would be the same width, since all literature seems to indicate the tires are the same size on all four corners.
