Header Install: A few questions

Im installing Stainelss Power 1 7/8" LT headers w/ hi-flo cats on my 2010 SS M6. The headers are awesome and fit perfectly on mock-up. I'm very pleased with the completeness of the kit from Stainless Works.

In the kit, they supply a tube of high temp silicone rtv and the directions say to just use the supplied rtv, no gasket. I called the Stainless Works tech line and the guy said that is what they use for performance testing, but he gets these calls all the time. He said I could use factory gaskets if it makes me feel better.

Have any of you used just the rtv sealent to install your headers? How did it work? Do you wish you would have just used gaskets?

Also, where are guys putting the wideband O2 sensor bung when running cats? Guage instructions say before cat, but a couple people are telling me not o put it in the header collector. The next available spot to put it is after the cat. One guy I trust told me to put it after the cat. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Zane

RTV will work, but will be a pain to get off in the future and a pay to scrape off. Id recommend using OEM gaskets. Widebands get installed before the cat

Use new factory GM metal gaskets that came on the car.

Thanks. I think oem gaskets will be easier to install anyway. I'm going to pick up a set in the morning. What you say about the bung placement for the wideband makes sense to me. I'm going to take it to an exhaust shop to get it welded in.

Here's another question: The PO installed a 3" Flowmaster cat-back, and The Stainless Works set up I am intalling is 3", but they both neck down to 2 1/2" where they mate up. Is that short 2-3" section of 2 1/2" going to be a restriction I need to worry about? I am thinking about asking the exhaust shop to put a 3" flange coupler there to remove the restriction and provide easier teardown in the future. Thoughts?

The O2 sensor bung is good just make sure it points towards the center of the car and no the outside so the sensor has room.

Stainless works has a performance connection option that gets rid of the 2.5 inch connection. Call them and ask about it, maybe you can return it and get that set up

Excellent. Thank you. This is exactly the kind of advice I was hoping for. I'll give them a call in the AM.

Another question-

I'm seeing guys using anti-seize on the header bolts on a few youtube videos. I like anti-seize, but I seem to remember hearing that its not advisable to use anti-seize on a steel bolt in an aluminum head. Am I imagining things or is that a thing?
Please forgive the stupid questions. I've been fiddling with the Camaro and drinking a few beers today. I'm about 8 beers in now...

A little anti seize wont hurt anything, its used all the time on spark plugs in aluminim heads.

A stupid question is the one thats not asked.

Just installed long tubes this weekend, use the stock OEM gaskets, and yes use a little bit of anti-seize on all the bolts.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I bought new GM gaskets and installed them this morning. Bolts are anti-seized and torqued down. Should finish everything up later tonight after I deal with some family stuff.

Looks great!! Am I going to regret not getting the insulated spark plug wire boots?
