Letter cutouts on vinyl: Before or after?

Ive seen alot of the vinyl hood spears that people put on with an SS or 426 lettering on them. Most of them look like they are cutouts because you can see the gloss of the body paint, which make them look sweet.

I'm wondering it this is done before or after they are installed. Whether people have cut them out somehow after the vinyl is placed.

This is ofcourse for selfish reasons because mine were already factor installed.

they are done before. at least as far as i know. from searching the sites that have different vinyl options, they show them with the lettering or say you can get custom lettering.
