Car temp is getting over 245° an the dash temp gauge isnot moving
So its been pretty hot here this week (read 120°) and my car coolant on my DIC is reading up to ~250°, and my dash temp gauge is staying in the same location (a little cooler/left of the center mark). So im not sure what to look at with my dic reporting a range of values (170-245) and the dash gauge doesnt move.
Anyone got any ideas where to start, normally i change the t-stat but not sure what the ls3 uses for the dash signal.

Have you checked coolant level?

Like the poster above, I'm in Vegas and haven't seen above 200 on the highway. In town stop and go, highest has been 208.

I'm in the Phoenix area as well, and routinely see coolant temps at around 195-208 at this time of the year, while oil temps climb routinely to 225-230 in normal driving. You're S/C'ed, so that certainly has something to do with higher temps. As stated, I would check the coolant levels first.

my coolant level is fine and my ECU is reporting my coolant temps, my big concern right now is why my dash is not reading my temp? the overheating is most likely related but gota find what reports to the dash temp gauge. as you can see in the pictures my dash temp doesnt change. not sure what would cause this issue
at temp really hot

Go by your DIC. The temp gauge on modern GM cars are glorified idiot lights. There's, cold, up to temp, and overheated. Hitting 240 i would evaluate your antifreeze to water ratio or look at an upgrade.

My temp gauge hasn't moved, once up to operating temp, in the almost 5 years I have owned the car. Somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 like yours. I set the DIC to coolant temp every time I start the car.

I never really looked at that gauge (i have a coolant temp alarm set up at 230) so when my alarm went off i started too pay attention to it and noticed that. Guess ill start with flushing and refilling my coolant, and go from there

Here is my total cooling system refresh approach...
Drain it...give to place that can recycle it. Buy some fresh Dexcool. Mix it yourself, don't buy the premix stuff. If in a hot climate 60-65% Distilled water. 70% if in scorching hot desert type climate. Replace thermostat and radiator cap...OE spec, GM parts. When refilling, really burp those air pocket out. Raise front end a bit, fill, have a helper hold the engine RPMS at 1500-2000 while you continue to fill. Keep rad cap off for about 10 mins during this raised idle/burping/filling. When people just fill and let idle is when air pockets get stuck in there, gotta get that rpm up and flow up with the cap off while topping off. You'll see when the stat opens, all of the sudden it'll be rushing like crazing in the rad. Then cap on, let it get nice and warm and watch the fans to make sure they are coming on high. High fan mode in these cars is significant and obvious. If you don't hear the fans blasting, check fuse. Peek in at the radiator front, make sure bugs/debris haven't built up. If S/C, make sure that system is topped off, similar percent distilled water. And make sure it's pump is working. Too high a temp...could be too high a percent Dexcool, blown fan fuse, air pocket, thermostat, rad cap.... when one is being a bugger and getting hot.... I just go through all that stuff. Especially important in hot climates to get that water percent right. |

I take the hose off of the driver side coolant crossover pipe when I am filling.

Mine is running warm here in Ky it's been hot here too nothing like that tho thank god! But on 90 degree days it gets better than 220 when setting still till the fans kick on and bring it down then it's back up. But when I did my cam install I done straight antifreeze no water. I need to fix that. Tomorrow Pull a gallon maybe or 2 would you think.?
