Very few mods make their claimed HP. If every product made its claimed Hp, we'd be making 20hp from some catback exhausts.
Vararam claims 20-30hp (non tune) 25-35hp (tune only). It also claims 3-5 tenths in the 1/4 mile. I'd say its good for .2 or 20hp on average. You'll most likely see about 15 peak hp, but you could see 25hp in the mid range. The HP under the curve (in the middle rpm range) is important and should be noted. Several owners and Maryland speed have track tested their Vararam intake and they saw around .2 on average. That would equate to around 20hp. Also, dynos don't measure "ram air" affect the intake is getting at 80+ mph as you're going down the track. The Vararam intake design does a excellent job of putting outside air into the intake at speed. |

WE are talking tune model, all dyno's are different, temp., humidity, TUNER, all have effect. Tuner is same as Tom Henry uses. Original dyno was 305/300, tuned 327/340 BUT was on LOW OCTANE TABLE, added Vararam and did fuse pull and had tune CHECKED, not changed, 375 RWHP. Unlike others, low octane table is stock. Have you noticed that Tom's THR 2011 #1, LS3, headers, exhaust and Tune makes 475 HP. Now of course this is just hearsay if customer service from GM reads this, I made it all up.

The whole design of ram-air requires higher speeds to perform properly. The dyno probably won't measure the Vararams true HP output, since ram-air requires dense airflow entering the intake that becomes more and more relevant at higher speeds.

xD Or put the dyno on the back of a flatbed trailer and tow it down the highway at 70.

Seems to me the track times would be the best measurement of how well these perform at speed. But I see no reason why they wouldn't dyno well. The airflow path is the shortest and straightest available, the IAT should be close to ambient, and it doesn't have to pull as hard to get the air it needs.
I don't do the track, haven't a lot of faith in dyno numbers, but I do know that daily driving sure is fun.

But I would say the intakes good for 15hp or so. The "ram air" effect was a bad choice of words. The Vararam does bring outside air directly into the mouth of the intake. You can stick your hand/arm right throught the front grill into the mounth of the intake. That has to be worth a few HP. I have dynoed my car with an original Vararam. I also dynoed it with an LMR intake. Unfortunately I never dynoed it with the stock intake. But the Vararam made 5 rwhp more than the LMR intake. My car was tune for both intakes at the time. |
