Our club all uses hand-helds on our cruises. I had my CB mounted under my seat in the Jeep. The problem you run into is being able to hear the speaker. I bought a remote speaker (actually just used an old computer external speaker) and plug into the CB. You could also mount it in the glove box if you have a separate speaker.

Cobra used to make a model that mounted under the dash and all the controls were on the mic (maybe they still make it). You could just plug in the mic whenever you need to use it. Nice & clean!

I got a handheld CB a couple of years ago for a Cruise I was doing with other Camaros. Couldn't hear the person who was last in the pack when I was first. In fact, couldn't really hear him when we were standing next to each other. Mine was new, not sure if it was his antenna or what.

Think of a CB radio as a Nextel Sprint Direct Connect for a black '78 Trans-Am with Burt Reynolds driving.

A lot of the handhelds are tricky in their setup. Mine...made by Midland...if you are using power from the car (cig lighter), it assumes you're using an external antenna and will try to broadcast out the end of the ext antenna plug. Needless to say, range isn't good. You need to make sure it's using the handheld unit antenna (short, stubby, maybe 6" long) and range will be much better. |

Cellphones don't work on remote roads a lot of the time though...especially when you're cruising the back roads of the state of Washington.
I used to be a Ham Radio operator (never renewed my license back in the early 80's)...but 2-meter radio was the precursor to cell phones, and would be a great way to communicate with a group of cars, but...sadly, no one really does Ham Radio anymore. CQ CQ CQ
