DIY Grit Guard (pics Added)

I made a grit guard by cutting the bottom off of a 5 gallon bucket about 4 inches from the bottom. I drilled a bunch of 3/8" holes all over it. Turn it bottom up and put it in another 5 gallon bucket. It has worked really well, there is always dirt in the bottom of the bucket and so far no swirls.

I ran a zip tie through two of the holes for a handle to be able to pull it out of the bucket since it gets wedged in there pretty tight.

I did this because the car needed to be washed and didn't want to wait for a real grit guard to be shipped, and this was free since I had buckets on hand.

It's used when you wash with a two bucket method. One bucket with your soap, and a second bucket with clean water and the grit guard to rinse your wash mit, rag, sponge, bed pillow, whatever you wash the car with.

The grit guard lets the dirt that is rinsed out of the wash mit to fall to the bottom of the clean water bucket and not get re-introduced into the soap bucket.

You can upload pics directly to the forum, by clicking on the little post card looking icon (insert image). I'd love to see the home made grit-guard.

Thats really smart. I am gonna do that at my shop. Its brilliant and must isolate the mit better than a grit guard and doesnt allow the crap at the bottom to get sloshed around.

The ingenious part of a grit-guard is the 'legs' of it that form vanes in the a cross-shape. These vanes are what prevents the water that is under the grit guard from swirling, and thus prevents the dirt from recycling through current back into the water.

I am sure the idea above works, and likely works well, but I would also be willing bet that if you put dirt at the bottom of the bucket and sloshed your mitt around the water would become quite dirty.

Maybe add a vane like system at the bottom to stall the water current and prevent water re-circulation?

Other than what Todd suggested, I think it's a great idea!
