long road trip question

so im getting my IOM 2SS/RS with IOM interior and CGM stripes on the 18th or 19th and my dad and i are thinking of driving to LA right after we pick it up which is about 400 miles... BUT i am kind of scared because the break in says to vary your RPM for the first 500 miles (I think) and wed be cruising at about 80 the whole way there. So im just wondering if we go to LA in the camaro would i do anything bad to the engine or will it still be fine?
thanks guys

The break-in period is 1,500 miles. Read your instruction manual... not the whole thing, just the parts that are relevant to what you'll be doing.

Just vary your RPM's and your speed... keep it under 100mph and under 4,000rpm's.

If you're paranoid about putting 400 miles on it in one day, then stop half-way and have lunch somewhere. Let the engine rest and cool a bit, then go for another 200 miles.

You don't have to go 80mph the whole way. You can go as slow as 55mph on the highway.

Dude, I wish I had a free weekend off to cruise to Havasu. I'm not worried about it at all.

jdbaker - Oil change after 400 miles? Are you insane or what?

It's kinda hard to rack up the miles driving around Los Angeles. Not many open highways to just cruise on. I've got 350 miles on my week old Camaro... that includes driving to work for a week, and driving for fun on my free time. You'll get tired of driving so slow and stopping so much.

I put almost 1k on mine last weekend and all highway. Just don't use cruise control. Little variations in rpm are supposed to be good enough, just small changes in throttle that everyone does. But to supplement:

I would run in sixth gear for about 15min then switch to fifth, rinse repeat.

I would also drop speed to 65ish, then accelerate to 80 (most of the way was 70 zones) occasionally when traffic was light.

When I got in the city, I would make sure I hit 4k on the 1st to 2nd shift.

Take side roads the whole way. Lots of stop and go.

Agree and use the rest stops. Also if you can stop for a meal(s) and give it a good hour or two to cool. But probably would not hurt just to drive it on thru at all anyway.

You should be fine. Vary the speeds a bit and keep it under 100. We took one literally off the assembly line and drove from Oshawa to MI then the next morning to Atlanta and S. Florida the following day...No problems. And this was a real early one...

Hey u all I have 540 miles on mine and I am making a trip west to El Paso.... Which is like 620 miles. Should I change the oil before I go and do I still drive at diffrent Rmp's?

Thanks for the help....
