I was over at my friends shop today he showed me his brake pads this is what they looked like after 1500 break in miles this included a 800+ mile road trip from Orlando to Atlanta over Memorial Day weekend doing speends no more than 80 miles an hour and no heavy breaking you can see chunks of the edges of the pads are missing.

Thanks for the info, I will take a better look at mine. I am at 975 miles into the break-in and trying to keep it under the 80mph/4000RPM max. But I am noticing quite a lot of brake dust. Just a simple 25 mile cruise without any hard braking at all is leaving quite the noticeable amount of dust in the wheels. Is anybody else seeing this on their ZL1's?

Yes, mine look like they are covered in soot. I guess the high performance pads dust more.

The bad part is that chunks are breaking off on 2 of the 4 pads

Is anyone doing that Brake Burnish procedure the owners manual says you should do? I would like to know before I get my car, do I seriously need to do that procedure? Hell, my drive home alone will be 250miles on the freeway, no time to burnish the brakes on the freeway.

One person reported doing the procedure, but I can't see it unless you're going to track the car. I've never seen chunks of brake pad come off.

Yea odd as it was a trip from Orlando to Daytona and back to get new wheels installed and then from Orlando to Atlanta and back for the Fbody Gathering for memorial day weekend easy 1500 mile break in period no abuse.

Just a couple miles of driving after washing the car, I have brake dust on the wheels and on the rear bumper. My car is yellow, so it is easy to see. But just do a "dust test" with your finger and you will see it.

I see a lot of dust on mine as well. Just normal driving around town etc. I thought you weren't supposed to break in the pads until after the 1500 mile break in?

gm_joe - I'm seeing the dust too - Are you too thinking of changing pads to something that does not dust as bad? - Your right, sure shows on the Yellow after just a few miles of easy driving

high performance means dust. You cannot avoid this if you want the performance. Like do you expect 30mpg AND 580 hp? Of course not.
And those chucks (itty bitty corner actually) out of the pad is nothing to be alarmed about either. That stuff happens on my race car pads too. As a matter of fact sometimes worst. It is perfectly normal.

They should have a ceramic brake pad option when ordering the car.

I'll live with the dust. It is much like my Carbotech pads when I set up my Z06 for track days. Just knew I would be cleaning up after. Not to mention all the rubber marks from marbles, etc. |

The stock ZL1 brake pads are designed for maximum brake performance. The break in procedure for the pads will extend pad life if done properly. However, these pads will not last as long a normal pads and will create more dust.
