I thought I'd give an update on the new build. We did have to go ten over on the bore which puts it at 4.075 bore and we are filling it with Manley 10.5 CR Pistons and rings plus a set of Manley H-Beam rods w/ARP bolts. Crank had a little scuffing on it but was able to polish so no turning the crank. Arp head bolts and main studs. Livernois cam 646 lift and 228-240 duration on 116 center line, Livernois valve springs, pushrods, valley cover, cam phaser limiter, ls7 lifters and lifter buckets, bbk 1 7/8 header (coated) with cats. It made 713 on the stock motor so I think we could see about 800 rwhp so that should put us in the 9.70s@145 and that on at least 16.5 lbs of boost and of course I'll have to go to the Lt4 pump, can't run the big bore with this cam. The old motor broke the ring lands on #1 and #8, 4 of the cylinders weren't round anymore and that's why we had to go ten over. I could build the motor to make it a little nastier but I like to get another 180 plus runs out of this motor, plus I'd have to start replacing other parts with more hp. We might even be able to see some 9.60s in good air if everythinig goes ok. I hope to get a few passes in by the end of the season here in Missouri if the weather holds out and we can get it back together in the next couple weeks. I have to leave for SEMA the 28th so it will have to be before then as the tracks probably won't be open in November. I'll keep you updated as we go along.

Hum, good question. I'll have to find out on that one from Livernois. What do most use?

Problem is, he's had his pump for a while. Anyone know how to tell a Gen 1 big bore pump (max +10% fuel lobe I think they say) from a Gen 2 pump?

Mine is the early pump and you have to have a stock cam setup or use a Lingenfelter 6.5 mm cam lobe.

As I understand it, many are now using 0* lockout blocks, but yeah, it would be good to hear what Livernois suggests.

Their kit is more expensive so maybe it has the blocks with it.

Yes we are using the Livernois lock out blocks along with their valley plate. Everything arrived today. Mike will tune it and we might have two tune, he thinks we should think about E85 this time and we should be able to make 750 to 780 depending on what fuel we run and I will still run two 1000 cc nozzles of meth/water. Those numbers should be good for 9.80's, if we do want to run race fuel I think 9.70s and maybe a little quicker in really good air and in the heat 9.90 to 10.00's. I picked up the old pistons tonight, not good at all and its amazing on the last pass down the 1/4 mile it still went almost 140 mph at 10.13, part of #1 ring land was totally destroyed and #8 was just as bad and in the pan. If it can run that fast with that much damage, its gonna be pretty wicked.

Is there a general rule of thumb regarding when to use limiter vs lockout blocks?

Just like with any VVT engine as the cam gets bigger you have to limit how far you move it.

Our cams are all Zero degree lock out.

I didn't know that, Ted. I've got your smooth idle blower cam on the shelf, ready to go in soon! For some reason I was under the impression that you used the phase limiter blocks.

We do us a Phase limiter block, ours locks it out entirely for Zero movement.

That is what we provide in our cam kits if for some reason you didn't get a Zero block let me know.

Ted.

The other issue is that as cams get larger, power curve shifts to the right... meaning more RPM is needed. The cam phaser doesn't like higher RPM and tends to cost power up top. That was one of the biggest reasons for companies getting away from Comps 20 degree limiter and switching to a 0 degree lock out aside from potential PTV issues.
