Need Help !

My son 98 firebirds starter spins as if you were turning key but key is off , it happens when I hook up battery so I took starter off and it stops so I ground starter and it spins again with key off , it does nothing when I try the key , the car just stopped on him last week , i change starters because the other starter was smoked , sorry if this is wrong place to post but I need help thanks

Have you checked the ignition switch? not the key and tumbler but the electronic part. Had a 96 SS that did the same thing to me. Metal contacts inside a plastic case. plastic melted and the contacts moved and engaged the starter. Damn near caught the car on fire. melted the battery terminals and cables

Also check to make sure the solenoid isn't stuck closed on the starter.

Have the starter tested at a local auto parts store.

yeah i had the same issue with my 93 some years back, got a starter from autozone and when i shut the car off the starter would keep spinning, had to disconnect battery for it to shut off. ended up burning my wiring a week later. stay away from re-manufactured starters for sure
