Newly paved/reserfaced course = hard on tires?

A friend said one of the other owners from his club is skipping a HPDE weekend at Thunderhill because he feels the new track section(s) will tear up his tires.

I thought that was odd. I would think it is the opposite: new surface is smooth (hopefully) and uniform, old surface may be torn up a bit? I guess if it wasn't done correctly, it could come apart. But they should have the process down by now...

Any thoughts?

I think new surface is a little harder on tires but it is great for lap times...... I would just buy new tires if they wear out.....lol.

Next time your on a highway tell me what looks smoother, the tracks where all the car tires drive or the parts that no one drives on.

Fresh asphalt has far more exposed aggregate and the petroleum binders haven't leveled out from wear and heat cycles.

Cement or Asphalt?
If Asphalt what kind, grainy or black tarp?
Harder tires always be a better for longevity. They offer equal grip on cement, less grip on asphalt.

I've seen a couple of different patches at Thunderhill...

All I remember from my one time on the track was greasy black top. I don't recall any different surfaces, besides the rumble strips. I wouldn't know the difference between grainy or black??? I also don't have any idea what the new surface will be. But I would assume it would be like the rest... Just wondering if a new surface(s) is harder on tires than older surfaces. Sounds like it is...
