Nice article detailing what it took to break the piston powered speed record. I was able to make it out to the ranch as they readied for the 2nd attempt with the second race engine installed, but all the smoke from the wildfires kept them from flying.

One of the greatest aircrafts of WWII, the F4U Corsairs. 321 feet below the surface of Sebago Lake (Maine) rests two F4Us from WWII. They were piloted by two young Brits who were just completing their training and ready to head back to England as pilots with their new aircraft. Their last flight was a low level over the water when the mishap occurred. The came in low over a small diner at Simpson's beach as they approached the lake. Flying close together they hit wings and both went into the frigid Maine waters. Bother aircraft were located and filmed while I was a LEO for that area. The US Government, US Navy and the State of Maine has them listed as final resting area for the two young men, neither aircraft can be salvaged. Because the waters of Sebago Lake are so cold at it's deepest area where the aircraft rest (321') both aircraft have retained their vibrant image of a long lost thrill of these two wonderful young men. I believe one of the lads was not quite 21 yet!

Yeah, I spent some time with Scott at the Ranch in Idaho, and at Reno.

I have been to Reno every year since 2000, with the exception of 9/11.

Last lap. The pass. Jay goes high in Strega, dives down in front of Voodoo and wins the race.

Wow thanks for sharing. There was a Court case over trying to raise them. Back in 80's flew for a Regional in NE We took a Hike on a layover in Bangor to where a B52 out Westover MA. had crashed back in the early 60's. Here was a good Article on a Maine Aviation Archaeologist https://downeast.com/the-wreck-chaser/
