How much does your DMV gouge you for tags?
I was curious how much you actually end up paying for tags when you register your car. Delaware is 10.75% plus $200. 4.75% of the purchase price is a sales tax that they call a fee but that it's on top of a 6% state income tax. On a 35K SS the breakdown would be;
$2,100.00 Income tax $1,662.50 Sales tax $ 200.00 Tags ------------- $ 3,962.50 I know some of you have higher sales taxes but lower income taxes. Is this in line with other places? Added: I guess I should have said What is your actual cost for tags from your state? Does your state charge both income and sales taxes on the money used to pay for the car and tags? They charge you income tax when you buy a car?? Not sure how that is supposed to work. Florida charges sales tax and normal registration + tag fees (6% I think, and 40 ~ 100$ depending on car) Then they charge an Impact fee which is about $200.

The income taxes are nuts. I didn't even know till last week that some cities actually have an income tax!?! Not just states?
No wonder everyone is moving to Florida and Texas? |

Same as a carjacking just with a quill not a pistol.

In OH, sales tax is 5% plus whatever your county wants to add on top of that. In mine it's 2%, so total of 7%. After reading your post, I won't feel as bad when it's time to renew tags. Here's my latest - and this is after a new increase: Special Plate Fee: $0.00 State License Tax: $31.00 Local/County Tax: $20.00 Logo Price: $0.00 Service Fee: $3.50 Postage: $0.36 Charitable Donation: $0.00 TOTAL: $54.86 I think they charge something like an additional $3-5 for new plates, as opposed to just the sticker. The title filing fee from my dealer is $25.50. Of course, that's on top of their $250 "Document fee" which I realize is just a markup in disguise (but I'm thinking all OH dealerships probably charge it).

I'll be paying $3,000 sales tax and $440 for registration. Such is existence in present day California. Most of the sales tax will be recovered when I file next year's tax return.

In other words I had to make $37,100 just to get the $35k for the car and $2100 state income tax on the money earned. Then pay them the other $1600 when you get the car. |

No state income tax FTW!
Other taxes still FTL but oh well. Here's the fees in FL... Yearly registration - Automobiles, private use >3500lbs $44.60 Transferring a license plate from another vehicle $4.60 When a new metal license plate is issued $10.00 Initial Registration fee $100.00 I'll probably get a specialty tag which'll be another $25/yr (but that goes to the "cause").
