L99, A6 (1st gear discussion?)

I'm trying to clear up the confusion about the A6 not starting out in 1st gear. It does start out in 1st gear when using regular D (drive) and M (sport mode).

If you're in D (regular drive) or M( sport mode) and you start out from a dead stop and mash the gas, 1st gear will hit redline at 35-37mph and shift up to 2nd gear. It does this in D, and M mode (not using paddle shifters).

If it was starting out (dead stop flooring the gas) in 2nd gear it wouldn't shift until 60-70mph (where ever the 2-3 shiftpoint is).

So Yes, the A6 starts out in 1st gear when in D (regular drive) and M (sport mode).

Thanks

The only time the car will start in 2nd gear is if you are manually shifting up the gears, come to a complete stop and don't manually downshift. The transmission will down shift for you but only to 2nd gear.

That makes sense.
There's been a lot of confusion and a lot of people think the A6 only drops to 2nd gear when driving around in D or M mode.

I drive with the speed of the car showing in the DIC. I know that when its in M mode and you've initiated the tap shifts, it shows you what gear its in. But in D or M mode (without using tapshifts) it doesn't show what gear you're in. It just shows M and S (s for sport).

Unless there's a different mode of the DIC that I haven't discovered yet.

This quote is from another thread, "The L99 6-speed automatic only starts off in 2nd if you are in A position, or if you are in M position running in Sport mode. If you are in M and run with the Trip-Tronic you can kick it into 1st with a flick of the left flip-off finger."

this have been discussed so many times. "m1" doesnt show up when you shift to M because it is in sport mode, a completely different mode than the paddle shifters. to start the using the paddle shifters you have to click on of them.

When you first put the shifter to the M (manual) position at highway speed, the DIC simply shows S for Sport mode, no downshift occurs as with my 350Z. As soon as you downshift, it displays S5, S4, etc., but will only drop to 2nd gear, unless you hit the "-" tapshift button when stopped. The manual says, "A 1st gear start can be selected by using the Tap Shift controls on V8 models." See section 8 page 29.

The question is whether or not the A6 will start out in 1st gear in any mode other than M-with paddle shifters.

Would probably help the 0-60 times if you could start out in 1st gear without using TapShift. Only way I know to get to first is to Tap down, but then you are stuck having to launch and continue using TS.

YES.

That's what I've been saying.

My A6 starts out in 1st gear everytime from a dead stop using regular
D (drive) and M (Sport mode).

The only time I will NOT start out in 1st gear from a dead stop is when using the tap shifts. If you're in M mode and using the Tap shifts you must manually drop it to 1st gear. Otherwise it will start you out in 2nd gear from a dead stop.
This is where all the confusion started.

But yes, the A6 starts out in 1st gear (from a dead stop) automatically in every driving mode except (manual tap shift mode).

And what makes you say that it starts in second when you use the tap shift

OK... I tried this morning.

- While driving in Auto. Pulled back to M (30mph) and never touched the shifters
- Came to complete stop still never touching shifters
- Slowly took off to 1500rpm and downshifted (one left tap)

Result... RPMs shot up due to downshifting from 2nd to 1st.

Hopefully I can be proven wrong on this one....

If you are using Tap Shift it's going to start in whatever gear you left it in.

if you’re at a dead stop and you shift to "M" and you click the right paddle "M2" comes up. if you shift you "M" from a dead stop and click the left paddle "M1" comes up. ok with this being said when you shift to "M" if you are in second gear why don’t the car try to shift to 3rd when you click the right paddle.
