Radius Radius Arm Replacement No More Steering Shake

Hi All,

It's been a while, but I thought I'd post this in case anybody else has the same problem. I tried searching but didn't come up with any solutions. Most related topics regarding steering vibration addressed warped rotors under braking.

My car sees open track days during the summer, so early last fall I was told that my brakes needed to be replaced after tech at the last session. I simply replaced the rotors and pads with stock GM replacements and they worked fine at the following track day. This spring I experienced a shake while lightly pressing the brakes around 70 MPH to and from work. I checked everything and even had the runout removed from the new rotors - still shaking at 70.

After parking it for the day in frustration, I noticed some oil dripping out of my radius arm bushing (O'reillys calls them front lower control arms) on the passenger side. After searching this site it was confirmed that the bushings are oil filled, so I picked up a complete arm from my local parts store. I'm pretty sure that I ruptured the bushing when I hit a nasty pothole I April. If you live in MI - you know what I mean.

I took it home and it is a beefier component than stock. The arm itself is noticeably thicker. I didn't see a difference in the bushing. But the ball joint has a grease fitting and two covers. One is hard plastic and the other is rubber. It bolted right in and the shaking went away. I'm going to replace the driver side this afternoon to make sure that they're matched. I have another open track day coming up; and want everything to be balanced/equal. If you have any shaking when you apply the brakes remember to check these bushings. The ones I bought are Precision assemblies.

So you got a non-stock arm?

A radius rod is another name for a trailing arm so the bushing will, indeed, come into action when braking, in an attempt to keep the wheel in its static position.

Regarding steering, if you're looking for a firmer/more direct feel check out JPSS's aluminum bushing inserts; or if you have a track-duty car I believe Pegasus makes full aluminum bushings for the radius rod.

The new pieces are definitely larger. I can feel more of the road's texture with the new ones when the surface changes. I have an alignment that's near the edge of the stock specs favoring road course work; so I'm looking forward to track day next week.

I'm may try the inserts in the future. It's not a dedicated track car so I'd rather have a little cushioning during sunny commutes to work.

Im pretty sure that plastic piece is just a cover for dust boot on ball joint and should b removed before install if its like most

You wont notice anything different with the JPSS inserts with normal driving, I have a set and it makes the steering more precise and doesn't sacrifice road manners/comfort.
