However, from purely a business perspective, it failed. When cars are still sitting on lots 2 years later and being sold at $30k under sticker, that's a failure. This is one reason I don't see a new gen Z/28 coming our way.

Also, where would it be slotted? Above the ZL1 1LE? It'd have to be monster and cost $80k+. Been there, done that and failed. Between ZL1 and ZL1 1LE? Makes no sense. Between SS 1LE and ZL1? Also makes no sense.

There is certainly a slot between the $45,000 SS 1LE and the $65,000 ZL1 Camaro.... take the standard SS Camaro at $37,000 and give it the ZL1's 1LE package and. Add $9,000 to the price tag to get $46,000, give the car ceramic brakes from the Z06 or ZR1 Corvette add $7,500 bucks for that and you are at $53,500 bucks. strip the interior and add that head and cam package that takes the LT1 to 535BHP and boom Z/28 for $55,000.

I could see that...although, hasn't the Z/28 always been king of hill track wise for the Camaro?

There is a slot but does it really need to be filled ? If you want people to give up an interior for performance and can't perform between the SS 1LE and the ZL1/1LE. I really don't think the Z28 is missed that much to just stick one out there. This is the age of the 1LE ,its a great package and a proven performer .

My proposed Z/28 will perform near and on some tracks faster then the ZL1 1LE car. My proposed Z/28 would likely come in at under 3,600 pounds which at 535BHP would smoke the SS 1LE on every track, the ZL1 1LE is 5.8 pounds per horsepower and my proposed Z/28 would be 6.7 which isn't that far off. Further more with ceramic brakes would have slightly less power loss not to mention the handling and braking advantage of having over 200 pounds less weight.

To top it off make that DCT transmission that Tremec has an option on the Z/28 Camaro then boom. It would smoke the GT350R for a good deal less money then that car.

For the first generation Camaro the Z/28 was the most expensive Camaro out there (sans some COPO cars). In later generations of Camaro the Z/28 was either the top V-8, the only V-8, or under the SS model. For the generation 4 f body they SS came above the Z28 car certainly from 1998-2002, the Z28 was rated at 305BHP and the SS was rated at 325BHP.

Yeah it was always the king of the hill track Camaro but never the HALO camaro. Probably would have been the ZL-1 back in the day because of the obsession with drag racing in the 60s.

Maybe on a super short technical track, but I think the ZLE would still be the ultimate track Camaro. And if GM continues to use the ring as the major marketing tool for track prowess, I don't think a 535 HP Camaro is going to outrun the ZLE on the ring.

If this is correct wasn't a SS-396 more expensive actually?

I realize you said sans some COPO cars, but that's still roughly 300 cars...

The ZL1 was the single most expensive Camaro for the 1st generation Camaros. The motor option alone cost more than the entire Camaro.

COPO cars were not normal production cars, someone could have ordered a Z/28 Camaro with the ZL1 aluminum 427 engine in it for example. This is why I don't count those cars, from my understanding and based on that list the Z/28 was a single package where as I believe that 396 Camaro listed also included some other options to it.

edit: When I looked at another RPO code guide for the Z/28 Camaro the price came up to $3,900 (Z/28 plus the needed 4 speed manual and brake upgrade which were required for the Z/28 Camaro).

You may be shocked as to how much weight or a lack there of can overcome power on a race track. After all the 900BHP Porsche 918 was recently bested at the ring by the 520BHP Porsche 911 GT3 RS. That is a near 400BHP difference between the two cars, so people might put a bit too much into the ZL1 1LEs power level as being the only reason that it puts down the lap times that it does.

While that is true, I just don't see a lower HP Camaro outdoing a higher horsepower one. I guess I am just a glass half empty type.

What did Corvette do to make the ZR1 faster than the Z06? They added a ton of aero bits, stripped weight were they could and gave it more power and more torque.

Why didn't they go with a NA motor and light weight extreme aero? My guess is that it wasn't going to be faster than the Z06/Z07

The ZR1 is supposed to be the top Corvette. It’s got to be over the top. That’s why they went with the 2.65 blower and extreme aero.

The Z06 is “supposed” to still be the track Corvette. The ZR1 really is just a Z06 Z07+.

According to Tadge, the ZR1 is like a faster Grand Sport in the way it drives. The aero was supposedly just to offset the negative aerodynamic affects of the grille design. They didn’t strip it out or go N/A because they knew that more customers would want all the features of a Corvette with more power than the Z06. They could possibly take 200lbs out of the ZR1 if they wanted to, and they could give it the DSSV setup, but that’s not what the Corvette customer wants. I certainly wouldn’t pay $120,000 for a car with no radio.
