Computer Upgrade

I just upgraded my computer.

Old sytem:
AMD Athlon 64 4200+ Socket 939
3GB of assorted DDR RAM running at 166mhz.
HP Mobo (I think it was a rebranded MSI)
XFX Nvida 9800GT
1.25 TB Hard drive space
Antec Earthwatts 650
and a Cooler Master HAF 932 Case
Westing House 26" monitor

The GPU, 1TB of the Memory, Power Supply, Monitor and Case have been added in the past 6mnths. It's been a gradual upgrade.

Well this week I got the big ticket items: 4GB GSkill DRR3 1600 RAM, AMD Phenom II x4 995 Quad Core 3.2 GHz, and Gigabyte GA-790fx-UD5P Mobo.
I clocked the RAM down to 1333 and put the timings down to 7-7-7-20. I'm gonna keep away from overclocking the CPU till at least the warranty is up.

Windows 7 experience index with the old system.

With the New System:

Size: 71.7 KB

Since I don't have any benchmark tests to give an accurate view of performance gain so I ripped Iron Man using DVD Shrink. Old System: 29 minutes 42 Second. New System 7 minutes 23 Seconds.

Next on the upgrade list are an SSD and new Video Card so i can get the whole thing above 7.0

I dont have windows 7 yet and Ive never done a dvd shirk test either

I do know your system is pretty good though! I started buying pc upgrades last year, but never finished the build. Im considering starting over because my mobo (intel dx38bt)will limit me. But then again, Its a budget build. I plan on getting a good 775 chipset cpu(e8500?), 8 gb ddr2 1066, ATI 4890 & WD velociraptor.

I currently have an XPSm1710 (nvidia 7900) and a 7 year old gaming rig desktop(p4 2.4,ati x800, 1.5gb ram).

Manimsoblack, have any sugestions for my build? Plus eventually I'd like to get a Denon receiver, some nice speakers and make my pc into a theater

Very nice system setup. The Phenoms are some great processors (which I am willing to admit even though I prefer Intel chips).

The E8500 is a great processor for the price. 2 other CPU suggestions though, take a look at the Q9550 and the Q9400 or if you want to stay around the price of the 8500, take a look at the Q8400. Depending on what you are doing you should see a pretty good jump from the Dual Core 8500 to the ones I have posted.

The 4890 is a great video card from what I have heard, I have the 4870 in my system that I rebuilt in January and am quite happy with it.

Excellent, thanks man.

I was hoping to get some feed back. I'm putting this in an Antec 300 cae with a 650w PS. I was thinking of getting a bigger case though.

I have to rock out on ArmA 2 and The Old republic (when it releases)
Dota and FT2 until then ;D

I pretty much agree with what lafountain said. You're not gonna want to go with a dual core at this point and the Q9550 is the best bang for your buck you can get from a 775 right now. You should also make sure to research your ram cause I've notices some companies :cough:OCZ:cough: seem to have much higher fail rates and compatibility problems than others. Can't go wrong with a velociraptor or 4890. I normally have a predisposition towards nvidia cards but I'm thinking about doing dual 4890's rather than getting a GTX285 time will tell.

Agreed. I used to love AMD but Intel has really upped their game the last couple (actually like 5 or so) years and until the 955/945 came out I was gonna go for an i7.

When I rebuilt in January I moved up to the i7 920 Processor. Was a major upgrade from my old Socket 478 3.0 Processor.

My Vista rating is 5.8, my hard drive is the only thing that isn't at 5.9.
