Sport mode 90%, track 10%. I like track mode on some of the back roads around here, makes it interesting.

Track almost always... except when I am trying to be quiet in the neighborhood or it is pouring.

Darn, I might just have to stop driving like a pansy and just use Sports Mode going forward to see how I like it.

Do you guys also like to Auto-Shift or do you let the tranny do all the work?

I shift with my hand. Those who don't shift with their hand have forgotten the face of their father.

Is there any advantage to using sports mode if you use the auto-shift option? I was always under the impression that the only thing it did was change shift points.

Sport is my default mode with Track for the track or autocross.

Tour when I need to take a phone call or forget to move from Track to Sport before I power down and then realize that it is in Tour.

I believe it does a lot more than just shift points...but I will defer to the experts.

Also, to answer the question, I almost never use the paddle shifters, and this is the first automatic I've had in a while.

If you have an NPP exhaust system, sport mode opens the exhaust baffles and makes the exhaust rumble lower and throatier (ie. bass). If you have magnetic ride control, it stiffens your suspension. If you have neither, then it just holds lower gears longer. and tightens your steering a little.

Contrary to popular belief, Touring/Sport mode does nothing to the throttle response... Snow/Ice retards it at low RPMs and Track (V8 only) increases the accelerator range until WOT for more granular control.

I have an M6 with NPP and I leave the car in Sport mode just for the sound, unless I'm in a residential area late at night. If your A8 isn't equipped with NPP, sport mode is going to be largely pointless for you.

When I had an A6 Gen5 (without NPP), I never used sport mode as it just wasted gas with no noticeable benefit as you described.
