3.91 gear install cost?

What are you guys paying for gear install. I have the 1lE 3.91 gear kit. I was quoted from $475 to $1250.

Mine cost me 300 and I supplied the new fluid. It was from a small shop and I helped with the install.

$1250 is too high but $475 makes me worry they may not know exactly what they are getting into. It could just be a really good deal though. $550-750 is a reasonable range.

Guys, you gotta remember that the rear diff has to come out of the car. That takes time, which means money. I don't remember what the book time on my car was but it was at least 5-6hrs. Take their hourly rate + cost of gears + cost of fluids and you'll have a good idea.

So,

Gears ~$450
Labor 6 X $90 = 540
Fluids $20 ?
calibration ???

You're looking at around $1k.

Permagrin, PRICELESS.

A guy on here who's a dealer tech said it takes him 4 hours.

I got quoted $800-1000 by a dealer that does performance stuff, I think that's high for just labor.

I have a local buddy who might be doing it for me, hopefully next week.

I was quoted 350 from a dealer if I brought the differential to them.

If you remove your differential and take it to the shop the labor cost will be much cheaper than dropping your car off to get new gears installed in your existing rear. If you can R&R your differential yourself, it's probably worth doing to save some cash.

I just had the 3.91 ring and pinion installed in my car by my dealer for $711 with tax.

I bought the kit (p/n 19301504) which includes calibration.

I was told the calibration is needed for the automatics only. The manual trans reads the speed at the wheels, not the trans.

That sounds like a "we don't want to deal with it,go away" price.

No freakin way it should be anywhere near that.

False. The speed is read in the same place on both trans. After a gear swap the speed will be off without a calibration and so will the mileage. A calibration is required on auto's because the auto's shift points must to be changed when gears are installed.

I'm scheduled to have mine installed 6/26 in the morning. Doing an article for GM on the install. I bet it gets done in under 4 hours. But then again, it's a shop that has been doing LS stuff for 16 years.
