Would I know the difference 93/87 octane

I have never owned a high performance car until now. Would I be able to tell if the dealer put 87 octane in my car. It runs find to me right now, but I was wondering if it would be a noticably difference that you could tell right off the bat. It's not sluggish or anything. Just wondering if the average car guy could tell.

yes.....for the simple reason your was designed to run on 93, thus is will perform better giving it what it was designed for.

BUT, as far as will the 'Average' car guy be able to tell?

Not necessarily. I never knew till I timed mine that it was slow.

The 'Butt Dyno' wasn't impressed even after the fuse pull. The 'Feel' was very subtle, and I could have missed it if I wasn't so in tune with my car becasue of the issue.

It's not the octane that you would notice anyway. It's what the motor does due to the lower octane.

I have read that some guys put 91 or even 87 into their SS's and it knocked.

The SS needs at least 91 or the computer goes into the lower performance table. When a gas station attendant accidentally put 7 gallons of 87 on my otherwise full tank of 93, it triggered the need for a fuse pull and I could tell.

just to be safe, since you have no idea if the dealer put in premium gas or not, do the fuse pull over night. do it for the piece of mind if nothing else. your car can run just fine on 87, but it will revert to a low octane table and won't be as powerful.

If it knocked where he could hear or feel it, he better take it in and get it looked at. Something is seriously wrong.

Anything less than 91 is not good. It will knock and feel sluggish

I would say if you had nothing to judge it against you would probably never know the difference. About the only way to tell is if you raced something you should have beat the tar out of or you hit the track.

Octane has nothing to do with making more power. Octane is an antiknock agent. Engines with higher compression need higher octane to prevent detonation.

True, but without the antiknock agent, the car will have to do something else. In the case 87 octane, it pulls timing which does affect performance. A common performance tuning techinque is to advance timing to the point of knock, then backing off. It does give you more power.

I did a fuse pull for a guy at our local cruise. He was bitching that his car had no power. I ran into him a few days later and I thought he was going to kiss me he was so damn happy. Yes it seems to be a noticable difference.
