Can I?

I am planning on sprucing up my engine cover.

I going to paint the part of it IBM.

But my question is, can put the CF looking vinyl on the sides of it?

Will there be any heat issues?

Thanks.

I have seen professionals put CF on the engine covers.
But it does get HOT! SA Chevy and a few others have found this out when they painted theirs.

Hmmm, well are you saying that paint gets hot, or the vinyl does?

The engine cover in general gets pretty hot, if you use paint it has to be high temp paint so I imagine same goes with the vinyl. Vinyl will probably hold up better seeing that it can get pretty hot on stripes on a black car in the sun. Some do hydrocarbon and it seems to do well.

hydrocarbon is a totally different process, more like paint. Chances are the vinyl will not hold up for more than a year maybe two, then it will start to turn.

You have nothing to lose by trying. Plus, it can always be peeled off and done again. That's why I do my bowties in vinyl, easily reversible.

I have my engine airbrushed and it's held up perfectly driving through Texas heat.

Ok thank you, I am definitely going to give it a try.

Should I put a clear coat over vinyl?
And if so, which one do you reccomend.

Not true. I painted mine with Krylon Fusion spray paint. It's not high heat (it's made to bond to plastics). I put a Krylon spray on clear coat on top of it. I haven't had any issues with it at all.

Ah true, I do recall seeing someone else use that as well.

The cover I recently saw with bubble must have been an adhesion issues not a heat one.

Thanks for the reminder!
