Cobalt SS Supercharged -> Camaro 2.0 - Will I be happy?

Dear Al,

I bought my Cobalt SS Supercharged new in 2007. It's pretty much stock with the exception of the GM Stage 2 kit (245 hp) and a rusty muffler (thanks NY road salt.)

I've put 144,000 miles on this car since 2007. As you know, Chevrolet did not offer a Camaro in 2007, and the Cobalt SS was pretty much their replacement at the time.

The car's in pretty good shape considering it is my daily driver. Aside from needing the usual wheel bearings that GM vehicles are notorious for eating from this era, and regular maintenance items, it has been a solid car. I do swap to snow tires in the winter months.

My question to you is this - coming from the Cobalt SS, will I be happy with a 2.0T 6M Camaro as a daily driver replacement? My parents have a 2SS Convertible and that LT1 engine is incredible. Love the exhaust note. I'm just afraid that I'll buy the 2.0 and then have buyer's remorse and wish I went with the V8.

I do drive a fair amount, but not as much as I used to. I think I put 7500 miles on my Cobalt SS in the last year. I do 90% highway driving - the Cobalt SS returns 29-30 MPG consistently no matter how I drive it. I think my parents' 2SS gets something like 24 MPG at best on the highway. The 2.0T I believe does 30 MPG highway as well.

Current car:

2017 1LT that local dealer has had sitting on their lot for over a year:

What do you think? I'd probably go used for an SS and new if I went with the 2.0.

Hey OP, I'm not sure this question is a good fit for the Ask Al forum, and there's a lot of subjectivity to it either way. It should be moved to the general forum IMO.

Now, in my experience if you ask yourself the specific questions you do, basically "will I be happy with the I4 or the V6, after all, I don't need V8 power/torque, gas mileage will suck, it's more expensive etc.", the answer is invariably no, you should get the V8, if it's financially viable of course. Remorse is pretty likely. (I got this one wrong, too, and it cost me.)

Then again, I assume you already drove that SS vert, so you have firsthand experience and nobody else can make this call for you.

Also, with the amount of highway driving you do, if you are concerned about fuel economy, you can get the automatic transmission and AFM will keep you in V4 mode enough to attain 30+ mpg on the highway, I have done it in my 2SS repeatedly. However, I cannot wholeheartedly recommend the A8 due to the well-known shudder issue, but you can get lucky with a used one that has already been tuned or is out of warranty anyway and you can get it tuned, or you may be willing to void the warranty, get an aftermarket torque converter with a tune, or perhaps you can go for a 2019 with the A10 that may be fixed already... there are lots of choices, this is again your call, I'm just trying to give you info.

My bad. Mods feel free to move this to the appropriate forum.

Yeah I've driven the SS. It's great. I actually haven't driven the 2.0T, and the last V6 Camaro I drove was a 4th gen automatic vert which was pretty awful in a lot of ways.

I'm not really concerned with MPG all that much, and I want another manual trans, so the 8 speed is out. I'll actually probably keep the Cobalt for around town driving.

I honestly don't need all of the features of the 2SS, and there are 1SS's selling with average miles for ~ 28k. I think the dealer is asking 24,990 for the 2.0T, I figured if I could get it for low 20's out the door that it would be a good deal. I'd like to hang onto whatever I get for at least 10 years.

In that case I'd take a 1SS with the M6 and never look back in regret.

The couple extra K you'll soon forget, but if the car doesn't perform and you're disappointed, you'll be struggling with that for as long as you keep it.

I took the SS vert for a ride with the top up today.

Pretty much made up my mind on getting an SS as soon as I pressed the start button.

I noticed the shifting is kinda clunky/notchy compared to the Cobalt SS. Maybe it’s just not broken in yet? Car has like 5k on it. Also the skip shift is super annoying. I shifted at 3k for the most part but when it locked me out it kinda caught me off guard.

If you haven’t driven the 2.0T Camaro, you should. You already know the 6.2 rocks, and by driving the 2.0T you’ll either like that, or not. But regardless of which way you go, you’ll feel better about your decision since you’ll have done your due diligence.

I might go take it for a spin. I was actually going to head up on Sunday but they were closed.

I figure if I can get it cheap enough, it'll be a solid reliable daily driver for at least 10 years. I'll absolutely rock it in winter, and I figure if I get the V8 bug I can just steal the convertible for a day.

I had a 5th Gen SS previously. I love my 2.0T compared to it. But I highly suggest driving one to see if you like the feel. It's for sure different but the feel of a stock one vs modified is night and day..If you were closer I'd let you take it for a spin. I talked two guys into buying them here locally lol
