chevelle ss 454
I know this is a little off topic but my co-worker and me had a arguement. I am trying to find factory specs on the 1969 Chevelle ss 454. In particular we were argueing about it would run in the 1/4 mile if it was stock. Does anyone have any info on this or maybe a website? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might be having difficulty finding info on the 1969 Chevelle ss 454 because Chevrolet didn't come out with the 454 until 1970. Look for L-78 396 and COPO 427 Chevelles in 1969 or look for LS6 454 Chevelle in 1970.

I don't think there was a 69 454. I think that was first year in 70.

It couldn't have been a 69. GM didn't lift the ban on engines over 400 cubes in intermediate bodies until 70. Thats why all the muscle cars suddenly started getting 454/455s in 70 when they had 400s at the most in 69. Only the COPOs could do it but that was kind of under the table and didn't get noticed.

A couple questions I have about the car (454 Chevelle), does anyone know how much power it actually has? It was under rated, but what did it really make?

I have an unmodified LS5 in my '70, factory rated at 360HP. I've never put it on the dyno, but if I had to guess I would say it's at least 400HP. This estimate is based on other cars I've owned or driven in the past -- like my '70 Monte Carlo SS454. I put a modified 502 BBC in it that dyno'd at close to 500HP at the wheels. As for the LS6, I think 450HP was close to reality. Both 454's made 500 lb. ft of torque.

Even then, those numbers were with the old system of rating horsepower, which was without accessories. Now they are measured with accessories so direct comparison to today isn't straightforwad.
