Canadian Dollar at Par

The Canadian dollar is creeping up and more reports forecast our dollar at par (not sure when though). Is this an opportunity for Canadians to buy the Camaro in the US (I think the US list starts at $22K)?

Would you consider buying it in the US?

Not 100% sure. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable could answer this. But from what I understand you cannot "transfer" the warranty cross border. But you can purchase a Canadian warranty........

As far as warranties, GM will only acknowledge them if the car is at least 6 months old and has a few thousand miles on it (I forget how many) when it has been brought across the border. This is done in order to protect the interests of the Canadian dealers. So if this is the route you will go, I suggest buying a new one, and then letting a Camaro5 member down in the states have at her for a few months.......lol - yeah right huh?

I would not recommend it ....... warranty would be the big one but also the registration and all the paper work involed, the time off , in the end you might save 1000 to 1500 max. I know the dealers would make you wait for any warranty work also.. Keep it Canadian :-)

Lets not forget RIV. Remember when we were at par and better not too long ago? GM made sure we Canadians couldn't bring over new cars. We were blacklisted from bringing anything current or newer model year over. Apparently our made in Canada cars didn't meet canadian safety standards?

I'm sure you are not allowed to buy a NEW Car in the states...the dealers will not allow it. Just likes we can't buy NEW motorcycles in the states..

Jees ...will you guys do some research before you offer unknown facts.

1) CHECK on line Register of Imported Vehicles (RIV) to see if 2010 is on THE LIST.
2) GM Warranty goes with the CAR ...not the owner. ( SEE # 4)
3) To get a dealer in the USA to sell to you, the Car must have been registered/titled in some one's name with a USA address.(DEMO'S DO NOT Qualify)
4) FULL GM Warranty will COMMENCE in Canada at 6 months and 6000 miles.

The fee is 195.00 (plus GST) for RIV.
GST is due at the border. On the Canadian amount
PST is due after the federal inspection ( included in the RIV fee)

ALL the above applies to cars made in USA as well as CANADA, but then sold new in USA.

In 08, 60,000 vehicles were put thru RIV in just one month alone. It's not that hard and well worth the savings on certain models.

You need to heed your own advice....that's 12,000km or 7,200 miles

It was 6000 miles on the 08 Silverado I brought from Arizona.

And the after tax saving was $19,500 .

It had 4000 when we left Tucson.

OUR72GTO, did you look at last years list? Virtually all NEW gm vehicles were on it. Do you think that GM will leave any new car off the list in the situation they are in now? They will not let Canadians away with it. Secondly, to put it in someones name in the USA -- good luck finding someone to let you do that unless they're a damn good friend or relative.
Guaranteed the 2010 Camaro WILL be on the list.

A broker will do it for a minimal fee, I've seen prices of $500..... You could also try using one of the dealers that has it's contract expiring in 2010, I bet they don't give a $hit anymore about playing by GM's rules....

Good point Rick! I would definitely consider bringing one over if the dollar continues to stregthen. I've brought lots of cars over and it is definitely worth the effort!

The list changes almost daily................

08 Vettes were at one time not permitted, 04 05 06 GTO were just added last fall.

I have seen Silverado's that were traded back to the dealer with only 951 miles sold to Canada. Key is they must have been registered in the USA.

Total different deal for Honda and others. They will not provide a letter of compliance from the manufacturer, that RIV requires. Warranty is not valid in CANADA.
