I just renewed my professional fire fighter plate and it was only 135. I pay 65 for the car in my county, plus 40 for the personalized, and 30 for them being fire fighter plates. Maybe go down to your local registration and see what the price is for getting a standard plate with your personalization on it.

There is a difference between "Specialty Plate" and "Personnalized Plate". You can get the normal Texas plate "personalized" for 40 bucks.

Normal registration is around $68

Feel Lucky your not paying $500+ for standard plates like we do in California.:(

Vanity plates are only another $40.

2/3's in a vehicle TAX based on est. value.

For that we get the honor of sitting in traffic with 7 million people a day.

Not complaining......I choose to live here......for now.

Look out Florida!

That is what I did for my plates. Just dropped the 5 year price on a Credit card and pay it off quick

Whew - i was worried I would have to give up my plates when I read this. But went out and mocked up a T plate (what I had to go with to get anything decent) and it is still $95/yr

When I went to switch my old style personalized plate to the new specialized format (Black with white star) I was told that they would have to transfer it over to myplates.com. During the conversation I was led to believe that tx.dot would not be dealing in any personalized plates any more which would mean that somebody buying a new personalized plate would need to do it through myplates.com. Anybody simply wanting to renew the old style format for the year could go ahead and do so though - sounded to me that as long as you'd had the plate a while then you could get away with the~ $85 annual fee.
