7 speed tremec manual transmission

I noticed that the new 2019 Camaro, is most likely, going to have the 7 speed tremec manual trans, currently only available in the Corvette, available standard or as an option. Since I drive my 2015 Z28 mostly on the street, and for work, I would benefit greatly from the extra overdrive gear to get better mileage. I do drive my Z28 on the highway quite often. I'm hoping this would be a bolt in upgrade to my 2015 Z28 or maybe a dealer could install it for me. Does anybody have any information on this or also interested in this upgrade?

Typically, Tremec is adding gears - 5 speed to 6 speed to 7 speed - for the purpose of reducing the gearing gap between gears, so, that the motor always stays in the peak power range and, if you shift fast enough, the car should be faster. The final drive ratios are usually pretty close and set for mileage. For example, the TKO 600 five speed in my '70 SS Chevelle has almost the same final drive ratio as the six speed in the Z/28, but, unfortunately, there is a big jump in gearing between 4th and 5th in the TKO 600, ie. 5th gear is only for mileage. The gearing jump between 5th and 6th in the Z/28 is obviously much smaller. I doubt you will gain any mileage with the 7 speed. Check the final drive ratios between the six speed and 7 speed and see.

Swapping that 3.91 rear-end with something a bit shorter (3.73, 3.42) would likely help you meet your goals of better economy/drivability on the highway.

I'd agree with what I think I'm reading into your message: it seems like I'm rowing thru gears pretty fast, and at highway speeds I feel like the car is revving quite high, plus the mileage kinda sucks. Not sure if that's somewhat due to redline being 7k, and the nature of the high-revving engine, but I can tell you this:

My 1996 Dodge Viper with a 6 speed and 3.07 gears gets about 22 mpg on the highway. At 90, she's doing well less than 2000 RPM. Seems like these Z's could benefit from a different rear end.

I haven't checked the forums for what rear-end swap is popular, but I'll imagine someone has done it. Likely easier/cheaper than putting in a 7 speed, although that would be cool. I also agree with the other reply about final drive ratio probably being the same, just keeping you in the power band better.

I doubt the 7 is coming to the Camaro, they would have done it by now. On another note....the 7 is also a rear mounted tranny for the Vette, won't work in the Camaro.

I feel my 6th gear is already too tall. I wouldn't want to drop the RPM's lower and lug the engine at highway speeds.

Fun fact, my 240Z got 28 MPG cruising at 80 in 4th gear. After converting to a 5-speed, with Idential 1-4 gears plus overdrive, the car dropped to 24MPG consistently. After trying to figure out what the issue was, I stopped using 5th for a tank of gas and went back to cruising in 4th, the car went right back to 28 MPG. Lower RPM does not always give better gas mileage.

Agreed... barely use 6th gear...

I'm pretty sure somebody has already found the 7 speed tremec RPO code listed for the 2019 Camaro. This means there is a behind the engine version being planned plus the mustang and challenger will probably want it too. With the 10 speed auto already available a 7 speed manual does not seem too unreasonable. The close ratio versions final drive ratio for the 7th speed is listed at .45 which will really bring the rpm's down at highway speeds. I plan on tracking my car at some time and the 7 speed trans will allow me to race the car with no loss of performance and still get 23-25 mpg on the highway. Getting the best of both worlds with performance and mileage with this combination seems perfect to me.

Go look closely at there web site, its not only rear mounted, that is what the vette paid for, there are other configs for that trans.

I have a C7 with the 7 speed for 3 years now and I might have used 7th gear a handful of times way to tall. Plus it shifts like crap till it reaches operating temps it also overheats fast on the track.

Hopefully they have improved it by now. Also the trans cooler may be better in the Z.

Who commutes in a Z28? His point was if you care that much about gas milage buy something else. 6 gear is already plenty high enough for me. I pretty much never get into it.

Go buy an ZL1 or an SS and leave the Z28 alone. This car was made for track guys. Those of use who bought it new don't give a flying flip about gas milage. 3:73's would be a big down grade on the race track. I am perfectly happy getting 15 mpg. I have taken my Z28 on several road trips across many states. I am fine flipping the gas bill to have that power. If you care at all about gas milage get some thing else. Don't talk about messing up the car for those it was intended for. It gets about the same as my 2500 HD.

You realize stock these Z28 will take a GT3 RS lap after lap after lap.... While for about the cost of a set of tires and brake pads you can get a Corrolla for highway use that gets 40 MPG.
