I was recommended the melling hi volume when i was pricing my nightfury package. For only an extra few hundred, seems like cheap insurance, especially when you read about a lot of the stock oil pumps failing around here

Another GM oil pump failure! Fortunately I was in my driveway, started my Camaro and low oil shut off engine! Not putting another GM oil pump in. Melling high volume pump installed yesterday.

I see from your garage you're cammed. How many miles since it was cammed and how many miles overall ?

14,000 miles and like many others on this ancient thread, I was talked out of having a melling pump installed by the shop that installed my cam. Needless to say he is out of business.

Union, have you had that car in north port lately? See one just like it on toledo blade a lot!

And I went with the melling high pressure when I did my cam setup, rather safe then sorry was my thought.

Hi pres Melling with TSP cam here. Installed by me, slapped on, not centered! :O 7k miles since cam swap, lot of rpm and running good. I dont trust GM pump. LT1 timing chain with cheap ass ASP pulley. I fear about the stock lifters more than the Melling failing!

Great thread guys.

And yes our stock oil pumps are melling, and I plan on a down the road mod.....replace single roller timing chain with Katech at around 50k on the clock for the new cam along with a oil pump and have my springs checked at the same time for wear/fatigue from the cam, and replace as necessary. And that's what I call real insurance that and running BR30 driven for break in of the cam then LS30 driven racing for the engine. I know it costs to drop the pan with the way our cars are built, and the builder did not seem thrilled to try to snake a new pump in when the stock is a good pump. From what I have read mainly early 2010 models had the sticky valve problem as reported on the posts here, or people who run mobil one and think its all that......... http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g3115.pdf

Stock tensionnet is junk and it was broken on my stock engine after 20k miles!! ALWAYS CHANGE TO A LS2 dogbone tensionner!!! Man this LS3 tensionner is a joke!!

Stock timing chain arr strong too, they rarely break, so I went with a nee LT1 style chain, seems more thick than LS2/3.

Don't see a reason why not to believe you, but I know a local muscle car LS and Stang shop, 25+years, and the owner swears he has never seen a stock oil pump failure on these, and you know what, I believe him too.

I seem to recall Jannetty swearing by the OEM unit as well, but don't quote me on that one. Research research research, as with anything else in life I say.

If someone could calculate the actual numbers and narrow it down to a realistic rate of % failures, I'd be all ears.

I wish I would've went with a different shop, but there aren't many shops where I'm at. Oh well she's back together and runs like a champ! AC compressor had a hole in it also.

Ted Jannetty believes in EOM pumps. See post#52 in this thread that provides hard data from Melling that Ted asked for about why a Melling should be considered an upgrade over EOM. Very informative.
