HP tuners

I'm looking at getting into tuning and using HP tuners. Anyone here savvy with it? I am looking for some tips, guidance, and experience. Thanks.

I'm getting it as well, but am terrified to make changes myself lol. GPI will be remote tuning my car with it, so I guess I'll just be data logging at first. Would love to learn it, but it seems VERY involved

If you're only ever going to tune one (your own) car, it's probably not worth buying it; UNLESS you're progressively adding components (i.e., one month, headers, another, cam, another, injectors)...

I bought it as an Xmas gift for myself, like 6 years ago. I've only messed with like 20% of the options it provides.

On a stock car, most would only change the PE which is overly rich from what I remember, and maybe the main timing table to gain a few pound feet of torque.

The more you modify, the more you'll have to learn. If you put in a lopey cam, you'll have to adjust the misfire detection tolerances (and some other things).

There's this "new toy" curiosity that'll make you want to mess with the other 90%, but then when your car runs like crap, that'll wear off quickly. IMHO, the less you change, the better off you'll be.

You'll also learn that changing X affects Y and Z... I was messing with one of the vacuum tables on more than one occasion which led to the car starting more quickly than it ever did from the factory, but then it caused a rich spike while accelerating.

I'd start by reading the book by Greg Banish. It will help you understand the basics. Then the hpt forum, the tuning school book/onine courses, Greg's online courses, etc. are all good stuff. I believe you can still purchase Ed Mowton's books and Dan Maslic's book as well.

Thanks for all the feedback y'all!! I'm taking many variables into consideration. Such as the new toy feeling, is it worth it, etc. I'm looking to use it on more than just the camaro. I got some other toys. My camaro is already modded and the mods will change. I feel that being able to tune or know what is going on in the tune to be the biggest reason to learn.

If you enjoy tinkering, I think it's worth it. You can find stuff to chase all the time. For example, getting the last little bit of driveability tuning. Getting idle exactly how you want it, including rpm drop rate with clutch in, etc. None of that stuff is necessary, but if you enjoy messing with stuff, it's a blast. I just pick an area to learn and play with and go from there. For example, right now I'm working on adaptive idle controls to get the minimal amount of throttle blade and spark correction, and keep them from fighting each other. Certainly not necessary to get it running great, but fun, nonetheless.

Rob, that is my thought on it as well. I enjoy tinkering. This will allow me to learn and change a bunch of things to my liking. Instead of always bugging a tuner buddy of mine. Lol.

I am currently tuned with Hptuners. Before my current build I had a tune from him for when I was stock(ish). I didn't find it that good...I won't go into detail on here.

Yea, I have been watching a lot of YouTube videos. I need to get on the forums. I'm also slowly learning from someone as well.

Check out the courses from The Tuning School. They offer printed courses, online or classroom schools at their shop in Florida (and around the country). I read everything I could find online, but really didn't get comfortable with the HP Tuners software until I took the class in Florida.
