Help - rumbling/humming/growling noise at speed
I have a significant humming/growling noise around 88+mph. I didn't notice it until I got on the toll road (85mph speed limit). Its worst above 90mph. On the track I am now hearing it through my helmet.
Wheel bearings, driveshaft, diff recently replaced or rebuilt. The noise was there before the driveshaft was replaced. Suspect axles or maybe clutch throwout bearing??? The axles have about 1/8" play if I grab the big plastic cv cover at the diff and move it side to side. Car has 59K miles. I have gotten the diff and wheel bearings very hot at the track but again both newish and I did not have these issues before. Thanks!

Well LOL thanks guys for the input. Anyway I bought ChassisEars for $105 on Amazon and listened to the 4 wheel bearings, diff, and trans. The trans is very noisy, but did not change when the humming started. Neither did anything else. I am due for tires. Will recheck after fresh rubber.

I’m dealing with similar noises but have a good idea where they’re coming from. I recently installed a diff with 3.91s, truetrac, and LWP cover. At the same time added poly diff bushings and Pegasus solid subframe bushings. Driveline feels great now, but all of the driveline sounds now transmit into the car.

LOL I misread the title to say "low speed"...don't ask me how. And then I open the topic and see "around 88+mph". I'm like WTF. One of those mornings.

New tires and problem remains, though less prominent. The noise is more in the 100 mph range than 90mph. Thinking diff now because there is some whine under acceleration. Ugh, I don't want to pull it after just getting the car right.

In the end this was likely a bearing on the transmission. Lots of full throttle at the track. The 1LE trans has a bearing at the output but the standard SS does not. I think this puts too much stress on the last bearing before the output shaft (somewhere forward of the output from the trans). It allows some wobble at high rpm especially with a 3.91 conversion. Update kits are sold that puts a bearing right at the output shaft like the 1LE trans. A tell tale sign is some weeping of fluid at the output shaft.
