I think it depends on the person. I taught my son to drive stick in 2 hours after a couple days it was second nature to him.

I tried to teach my daughter, after 6 weeks she gave up and informed me she no longer has interest in learning

There is a great opportunity locally to pick one up, but am nervous about it, especially since it's a ZL1.

Going to go look at it tomorrow but wanted to know if learning on a new car is a good thing, especially a car with so much power.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Go to your local Renta-wreck, and practice on that first,,, you would really hate to wrap that 550+HP ZL1 around the first tree you see

looks like everyone else has covered all there is to know about learning to drive stick. Its very easy IMHO with newer cars and a powerful car at that. Like everyone else said its that first time u let out the clutch is the hardest shifting is easy.

Learning is easy, especially on a Camaro. I learned on my girlfriends Infiniti and I was able to do it, but the clutch was so much more difficult to get a consistent feel for than the Camaro. Once I switched to the Camaro, it was cake.

He had explained it when he drove, and it was a little harder only because the truck didn't shift well because it was an old POS Ford.

Shortly after that, he got us riding motorcycles.
I learned on a old Toyota pickup truck in 1985. All jokes aside, it was pretty cool to learn to do. Made me feel pretty good with all my friends driving automatics. I was 16 years old and making fun of the auto tanny guys.

OMG, I can't imagine teaching my daughter to drive a stick. She's struggling with the auto now. My son was a breeze.

Hey now! Speaking up for the ladies! I love driving a manual! All my cars have been sticks. Nothing like a good power shift!

Hubby on the other hand has never learned & has no desire to, so he's earnestly been working on convincing me to order an automatic.

Nice to see posters offering help in here.

Have your dad teach you, let him yell at you for 5 minutes as you sit there fumbling with the shifter like your first time unhooking a bra strap and then your dad says he gives up (after 5min) and then let your cousin drive you around for the first week and you practice now and then and then finally you realize after a month you're shifting down to 4th gear from 1st instead of into 2nd gear and wonder why your cobra mustang lags so much and also wonder why you never seem to have to use 3rd or "4th" gear. Anyways that's how I learned

Never really learned stick until I picked up my SS the same day. I asked the dealer to teach me. He was great. Took me out for almost two hours. I got the hang of it but still scared of hills. Had two freaking jerks ride up my a$$ on an incline today. Wasnt fun but that's how you learn.

Totally agree with RJT. That's how the dealer taught me.

Good luck and have fun!

its not hard to go to gear to gear. its getting going from complete stop that gets people.

I learned to drive a stick in San Fransisco in my mother's Toyota Celica back in the day, that was a crash course. I was comfortable driving any manual car or bike after that!

Takes years of dedication and experience to master a stick.
