Need to cut a new key - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

I bought a new key fob on Ebay since mine kinda broke, the rubber push buttons were cracked.
So Where can I go and cut the new key?
Is this a dealer only service?

I'm pretty sure anyone who does keys can cut it. The key itself is just a key.
However you may run into some problems with the remote if it's not from GM. I'd assume they have chips in them, which won't start the car if it doesn't sense a chip. Partly to prevent people from copying your key and stealing you car. Also the remote has to be paired with the car. The process is quite simple but requires both the new key, and the old key. It may not work. If the chip is involved in pairing the remote and there's no chip, you won't be able to use the remote. Same if something is wrong with the radio in the key, it won't pair or could malfunction.

Some stuff is OK to buy on eBay. I'd never buy a key, since it's a major part of the vehicle and used all the time. I paid less than $50 for a new one at the dealership.

The plan is to switch the PCB from the old broken Case in the new one. That should not change anything about the programmation with the car.

Yup. It was a Chevy bowtie, not a Camaro logo, but it's the same device, they just happened to have it in a stock, and I wanted a spare so I really didnt care. To program it, is really simple, you can do it in about 20 seconds.

I picked up a new fob a few months ago when I purchased my 2014 2LT RS and it only cost me 50 dollars and they even cut it for me. I was told that it laser cut and also you can only use a new fob as they can only be programmed once. Also they are very easy to program as long as you have one working fob for your Camaro. takes about 30 seconds or so. here they video I used to help with programming mine.

You can switch the blades. You need a really small pin punch and the cut part of the blade can be transferred to the new fob. Then just program the new fob as mentioned. I've done this it's not hard.

The new fob is an empty shell. I will need to replace the hole PCB too.
I hope the Cut key can be transferred, it may not be similar to the original spring release just like in this Video:

I had the same problem and went to a local CarMax that charged me $20 to laser cut the key, I also got a new one off ebay. CarMax is the cheapest place I've found for laser cut keys since they basically deal with lost keys all the time.

One local Montreal locksmith told me the only wait to get a laser cut key is to the delaer, true?
