Anybody else have this issue?

My car gets all this black soot almost like brake dust all over it. I’ll wash the car and after 50 miles the back has this soot all over it. I don’t know whether the stuff in the door jambs and near wing are related but the back of the car turns black almost instantly and is definitely coming from exhaust. I don’t know if it’s oil related or not, but I do notice about 1 quart of consumption every 1600-2000 miles depending on how drive it, multiple Chevy dealers have said the consumption is within range. But again, I don’t know if it’s related. Completely stock 2017 ZL1. The pictures don’t show very good, but it builds up a lot of this stuff.

It may be dirt and grime off of the roads. My ZL1 gets that way too and the outer tailpipes are sooty. The 2016 SS I had was real bad about looking like your ZL1 especially in the door jambs. I was constantly cleaning them especially since the SS was white. It seems with my ZL1 when it rains a lot the dirtier it gets when I do drive it.

Could it be brake dust?

Not sure how soot from the exhaust could get as far forward as the door jams. But, I don’t know. Mine gets that really fine dust like that too, but nor nearly that much. I’m gonna say it’s most likely brake dust. In the one pic where I can see the rear wheel, it looks like it is coated as well. It does seem excessive though if you accumulate that much in just a short amount of time. Have you checked to see if your front brakes are dragging too much? I’d probably jack up on front side and make sure the wheels spin freely. How are the pads and rotors?

Could be brake dust but not sure. Seems like my 2010 SS was that way too if I remember correctly. I do know that my wheels on the ZL1 sure get dusted after cleaning them only after about 100 miles or so.

Too much tire shine will definitely coat the sides of the car and rear. If I do use some it is a very light coat.

To collect on the front of the rear spoiler like that I would suspect an environmental or road source.

I get it too. What is interesting though is I starting getting it only after with my new Stance 20" wheels and tires. The wheels are 10.5 wide and the tires are meant to be "flush" with the wheel wells but actually protrude by about 1/4" from the wheel well (measured at the top).

My previous stock wheels 8.5" were much narrower and were inset quite a bit from the wheel well. More negative offset. I did not experience this dust and grime nearly as much with the narrower wheels and tires.

I suspect the closer your tires are to the edge of the wheel wells, with wider tires, the soot, brake dust and road grime are more apt to get on the car. My car also before when I went through a puddle or drive on wet roads did not get nearly as dirty as it does now.
