V6 Engine Cover Paint Prep

I'm going to get my engine cover painted, but I am going to do the prep work for it. So my question is what do I need to do to prep this, do I need to sand it, or do I just need to tape it and get the guy to paint it?

Just make sure to clean it good.

I didn't sand mine, but I didn't use like a gloss black.

What did you use to clean it?

Dawn dish detergent will work great or other comparable tough soap for grease. Was with Dawn, dry, and make sure you use a good primer. Trick is to use light coats and gradually move up to thicker ones as you work. You dont want to just start throwing down thick coats of paint as it will glob up most likely and not look right.

The only time you really should sand anything is if you're painting something like the tail light bezels or something that has that fake chrome stuff on it. When you do things like that you want to make sure to scuff up whatever finish is on there now that way when you prime and paint, the paint has something to adhere and stick to.

Why have someone else paint it...Simple, real easy and
FAR cheaper. Like 10 bucks

If you are serious about doing a quality job, first step is wax and grease remover followed by silver or red scotchbrite depending if useing single stage paint or base/clear. red for single, silver for base/clear followed by a agressive wash with isopropyl alcohol. The painter will prolly do the last step but its good to ask him first.
Hope that helps.

The engine cover is textured, In order to adhere properly it should be sanded first.

The absolute best would be remove the backing (eliminates dust), wash with a de-wax/de-grease solution (sold at any automotive paint supplier) then blue flame treat the cover sense it is made of PVC plastic. This ionizes the PVC then rewash with de-wax/de-grease to remove any petroleum that is released. Keep fingers off! use nitrite gloves (non powdered) to handle. I do Hydrographics and I have been certified. This is the only way I will ever do a painted PVC part.

I used Dawn, then cleaned with suface prep/alcohol product. I used an adhesion promotor for proper paint adhesion, then primer. Also been using rustoleum paints. Working great for me.

painted to last

I did this one as a show piece. I need it to last and be touched and repeatedly cleaned. Its up to you. Quality is in the details. Clean and prep is key.

I washed with Dawn; then wipe down with IPA; then Krylon Fusion as the base coat on the plastic. Still looks perfect 5 months later...
