Dances With Mustangs

If I recall correctly, the Z/28 was produced so they'd have enough of them to be qualified to run in the old Trans Am series back in the late 60's. As far as Camaros, they had a base model and two performance models; the RS or Rally Sport which was mostly a "sporty" look, and the SS or Super Sport which was the high performance street car. If I remember right the RS came with the 327 small block V8 and the SS was either a 350 small block or 396 big block V8.
The Z/28's were built to comply with the requirements of Trans Am rules. I've attached a picture of Mark Donohue's Penske/Sunoco Camaro and you can see the Z/28 badge on the front fender. They were the road race cars but had to be built in enough quantities and sold on the street to qualify for Trans Am. Later they became the "top performer" over the SS because of the racing image and success of Penske/Donohue. When they ran the first season of the International Race Of Champions or IROC as it became known, they used Porsche 911's. Second season they changed to Z/28 Camaro's, so the glamour and status of the racing image made the Z/28 the "high performance" car in the public's mind. Chevy naturally took full advantage of that and marketed it as such from then on. The IROC series produced some great racing with a field full of identically built Camaros being driven by some of the biggest names from Formula 1, Indy, Can Am, Trans Am, etc. I have great memories of being in the pits and paddock areas of the old Riverside Raceway in Southern California (now gone) and being around these racing greats and watching them race. I met Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mark Donohue and Dan Gurney all in one day there during qualifying and I got their autographs on my pit pass which I still have. Those were some great times.

But the IROC model was top dog during 1985-1990, If I recall, in 89-90 they went to just the RS and IROC model, with Z-28 being only a badge on the dash. 91, they dropped the IROC sponsership, and therefore, Z28 was the top of the line The top HANDLING model was given to the IROC (1985+), HUGE (for the time) 245/50/16 VR Gatorback tires... Bilstien Gas Filled Shocks, Thicker Sway Bars... etc Monikers are for Marketing, plain and simple... with the 4th Generation, SLP's evolved into SS models... and those were the Top Dogs... As if the Z28 can't replace SS in production and have SS be the blown beast.
I do not care what it is called. Call it d-bag edition and it would still rock. BUILD IT NOW. F#$% what the government wants. Buyers want this car. |

That is awesome! BUT, one question, and please excuse my ignorance, but I thought that the Camaro did not have rally stripes across the roof of the car?! Or did the original Z28's come with them? If you look in the picture, they are CLEARLY visible...
