Timing and degreeing an engine

So, I've been cruising through the engine and how to threads on here and a few other sites and it piqued my curiosity that you can find someone who has posted a detailed how to one doing just about everything but I have yet to come across a detailed how to set proper engine timing or degree a cam. Anybody have any links to such articles or threads on the subject? I'm about to do a cam install for the first time in years so I'm trying to find stuff to refresh my memory a bit and my old trade school books are stingy on the photos.
