I messed up#!$!

Well I watched the Junkman videos and bought the PC 7424, Lake Country Pad kit, M101, M205 and Menzerna Power Lock.

So step one, doing the car with M101. Looks great under the fluorescent lights in the garage, under and LED flashlight though, swirls everywhere, bad, bad swirls. Used the orange pad, PC on 5, followed video advice from Junkman, and now I have a mess. I had some small swirls from a wax job I started with a bad pad, now I have swirls everywhere. Help!!

Guessing you washed and clayed prior to the M101 correction step. Next step with 205 may remove your step one swirls. I don't use M101 but use M105 so I'm not sure of the cut in the M101. I would do a small test area with the M205 to see if it pulls out swirls from the M101.

You washed and clayed prior, correct?

Otherwise I don't see that combo causing swirls.

Same thing happened to me, on my black car the m101 left bad holograms, most likely boils down to bad technique and starting off with the more aggressive compound, at least I think that's what happened to me.

It's always garaged, yes it was washed and clayed. Only has 12,500 miles and led a charmed life until I was putting wax on with a pad that had some dried left over wax, and this was scratching the paint as I was putting it on.

It is much worse on the painted black stripes. Very hard to see on the orange. What did you do to fix it? I know it is not ruined, and can be fixed, but it's annoying as hell!!

M101 with an orange foam pad did not cause bad swirls, unless the pad was dirty. I one step M101 all the time.

That being said, M101 is pretty aggressive and can leave some marring - light haze. That's to be expected and can easily be cleaned up with a finishing polish.

Now, if the swirls are as bad as you describe, M205 isn't going to fix it.

Can I ask why you went with this combo? It's very strange. M105 would've been a much more appropriate first step.

You're about 3.5 hours from me. If you can't get it figured out and want some help let me know. I can walk you through it, no charge.

It is the XP. After reading about how good 101 is I went with that. The scratches from the botched wax job looked pretty bad. I was using the orange Hex Logic pad. With work I will not be able to get back to it until this weekend.

While I consider myself a decent photographer, swirls are not my specialty.

The first two are before pics, the rest are the after.

How often did you clean your pad when you were compounding? Were the pads primed with compound or did you just hit them with some detail spray?

The pad was primed with compound, and I did hit it a couple of times with detail spray. I did not clean the pad. I only did the hood, deck lid, roof, and one rear quarter panel.

I'm far from a professional but I see 2 things as from the looks of the (after) pics you have swirls, scratches and holograms.

1- Does not look as if the polished (compound) fully flashed.
2- Your pad(s) definitely had a foreign agent(s) in it.

You also need to prime with DS spray quite frequently (certainly more then a "couple of times"), you want a smooth pad rotation, it also helps with dusting. Also as mentioned above you need to clean the pad often with something like this:

Here are some pics from mine last week using a PCXP:

I think you guys nailed it. I had a lot of dust so it's pretty obvious the pad was drying out. So start over with the orange pad and 101, or use the 105 with the orange pad, or go to the white pad with the 205, keep it clean and make sure I keep spraying the pad with detail spray as I go.

Wish I had a POS to experiment on, unfortunately I don't.

As far as containments, the paint is clean other than my wax pad screw up. The car is never outside for more than a few hours at a time and sits in the garage.
