Angry Need Help My LS1 Has No Oil Pressure

I have been letting my mother drive my ls1 a4 back and forth to work for awhile now and she told me the other day the car lost its power like the drop of a hat. I figured it was just not run enough and maybe it needed some plugs since she said it was bucking. Then she tells me that it wont go past 45mph. So i finally get a chance to see what is wrong with it and i found that when driving the car is running seroiusly about 5psi oil pressure. It keeps cutting off and has plenty of oil in the motor. The oil was changed in may and has been driven about 600miles since then. The motor has about 128XXX on it and is all stock.

I dont know what to do besides not drive it.

Please send me some ideas on what to do i am lost. i have new plugs ready to put in because the motor is bucking but im thinking it is because of the loss in pressure.

Is there any knocking? When it is running, does the oil pressure gauge move back and forth? Do not drive the car anymore. Have it towed to garage that does engine rebuilds. It sounds like you have spun the bearings somehow. The mechanic should be able to tell you why, but spun bearings can be caused by overheating.

if the motor isnt making any noise leave it as it is do not keep running it. it sounds like the oil pump decided to let go and/or the o-ring from the pick up tube to the pump went bad and is venting pressure (this is he more likely scenario) this is a fix/repair you can do yourself or have have a mechanic check.fix.

have you drained the oil and looked for excess metal on the plug/in the oil?

when i first crank up the car it will run normal oil pressure with a slightly choppy idle no motor knocking or bearing noise. The cats decided they were gonna bust on this day also and i think they are broken up inside the pipes and cant get out. Which explains the loss of power but it doesnt explain the gauge reading no oil pressure. My mom drives the car super easy and i havent driven it in about 3 months

The oil pressure when cranked seems fine but after it warms up it runs inbetween 0-20 then it just stays on 0 and the dash says check gauges...

oil pump or oil pump O ring. and/or your oil pressure switch is bad. if the motor isnt making noise it in itself is more than likely ok. swap the oil pressure sensor (which is around 20 bucks) and then start the car and see if that fixes it. if not than more than likely its the pump or the oil pump O-ring which is NOTORIOUS for failing on LS based engines.

yup what he said- if you get a new pump get a ported oil pump as well. Also the 98 are on the only 4gen that the guages are actually correct, so I would not drive it till you have found the problem.

If a woman was driving it when the problem occured...your motor is toast. They dont notice things till its too late. It was probably run for a while without oil pressure. Im Just saying. I would hope for the best, but expect the worst.

GenII & GenIV engines have no distributor and the oil pump is driven from the front of the crankshaft, not like the old school motors that the can gear drove both the distributor & the oil pump.
