These threads never end up well no matter what forum you are on. You have the Valentine 1 guys & the Passport Guys. Personally I have a V1 & a Passport 8500. I vote for Valentine 1. There is a new passport series with all kinds of bells & whistles, but for the price & the update ability on the V1, I say V1.

Detection range is about the same for both detectors, but the V1 is much brighter & louder, and that comes in handy to me due to owning loud cars & listening to loud music. Also I like the arrow's & bogey counter.

All radar detectors do is tell you the Police already know how fast you're going. Save your money.

i always thought the detectors would only work when the radar gun is actually on and pointed at you.... by that time, its pretty much too late, no?

And even if it works only when the cop has the radar ON, but pointed at someone else... he's already got it pointed at someone ELSE. i.e. not you... how are you supposed to slow down in the short amount of time between him pointing it at some crappy car and switching it to your eye catching camaro?

Right now I just have it plugged in to the front power outlet. I just ordered a hard wire cord with a inline fuse that I'll tie into a spare/empty fuse spot in the driver side fuse box. Very easy to access, right behind the panel next to the driver side left air vent. Just plug in a spade into the line side of the empty fuse spot and ground the negative. The inline fuse will be at the start of the circuit and buried behind the fuse box panel.

this is what i have always heard too, basically if you're radar detector is going off its too late.

for me its not a huge problem as I dont generally speed too much (cruise control 5 above) but i am curious as to the answer

Detectors can warn you if they are tagging cars in front of or behind you. Yes if you are all alone on a deserted stretch of road and it goes off, well its letting you know you are about to see Red and Blues.
