Yes you need a tune for ported heads.

So did we get a verdict on pricing? I'm not going to purchase anytime soon (with winter/holiday season, etc.) but come spring/summer time I'll be back in the mod game again. Wouldn't mind adding another to the list

If you were going through the trouble of having your having your heads ported and the tune required afterwords... It might be worth it to look into swapping LLT heads. I imagine they could transfer the valves and updated valve train components from your LFX heads. Now you could have ported heads and long tube headers!
Some have speculated this might be feasible, might be something to look into....

They use a different set of cams. This is why mace had such a issue I believe.

Rumor has it that the late LLT engines use the LFX cams.

I think that if a guy bought himself a loaded set of LLT heads, it just may work... You could have the bigger LFX intake valves installed, but it would add cost.
